What's with the resurgence of the "adverts coming" bars?

Been noticing a lot more lately, they were on at the end of the football tonight, and just there before the break on the 10 o'clock news,

Anyone know what i'm on about? That little black and white stripey square on the top right of the screen?

Remember them being everywhere in the 80s, but they seemed to disappeared in the 90s. Now they're back, is it a conspiracy?

Or have I finally lost it?

they never went away :)

they were used by some video recorders to pause the adverts out of programs but the ad agencies soon put a stop to that :) iirc the real reason for them was to synchronise the adverts around the different regions of the UK

They've been on decades - I was watching an episode of Man About the House(from the 70's) last friday on DVD...

One of the scenes had the black and white stripey advert bar pop up - I was shocked to see it had been added to such an old show.

I'm presuming it wasn't there on first showing back in the 70's...?

In truth BBC do advertize, just it's advertizing themselves doing basic self-promotion. They do what Sky do, and have a couple of in-house adverts between loads of their shows.

Ha Ha, this reminds me of when I was little, my big bro used always say "adverts coming up" and I was amazed he always got it right lol, my Mum did eventually point it out..........I did say I was young at the time!!!
