My tv is mounted on a sticking out old chimney bit (I'm great with the actual names of things :-D ) and in the recesses either side, I stuck one of these floating shelves either side. The colour obviously went with the rest of my room as it's neutral colours, but other places out there do different colours/types of floating shelves if you decide to go in that direction.

Just make sure the shelf is deep enough for whatever you want to put on it though as those particular ones weren't wide enough for my Sky+ box, but I liked the shelves too much so got a small cupboard put in one of the recesses and put the dvd player/sky box on top of the cupboard and used a longer connection lead to the tv to make sure it all reached ok. Also bought a cable 'hider' from B & Q that you can leave white or paint the same colour as your walls, but haven't bothered putting it up yet :)
