use a dvd disc to be safe also some pc's dont come with recovery disc to reduce their costs so you get the option to make one when you first use the pc
#2
sometimes the recovery Disk is on a seprate partion on the hard drive and you have to make a Disk to use. The size of the Disc depends on the what it needs to put on a recovery disc, normally 1 DVD, but i have seen 1 CD and 2 DVDs.

Does that make sence?

You will have to make the Recovery Disc and it is very easy to do, just make sure you do it before you still putting stuff on your new Machine :)

Normally it asks you the first time you turn it on, if not it is probally just a matter of going into the HP software and it will be step by step and easy to do :)

If you have a read here at creating recovery disc in windows it explains the steps, It is always better to create more than one in case you lose one or one gets damaged,
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/fastFaqLiteDocument?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=18703&docname=c00608578#c00608578_CreateDisks
Just read you can only create one set so buy decent disks (verbatim are ok) and make sure you do it with it plugged in so you dont lose power,

you dont have to do the recovery disk creation immediately. It may well come with it anyway.

always worth having a load of dvd-rs anyway for data backups

This is a good deal for the amount you get, it would only be a couple of £ cheaper to get 1/2 the amount

Look at the table here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD%2BR

They are the same really, but -R are more compatible if you are burning DVDs to play on your DVD player thats esentially the difference :)

Some DVD players used to have trouble reading one or the other but now almost all read both and PCs have no trouble using either,

Unless you know you need +R or +RW always go for -R or -RW

Encase you dont know the RW bit just means Rewritable

Depends how you do it ;)

if you was meant to back it up from the magic place (Partition) on the hard drive it will backup what it came with as new, If you back it up with with another program it can backup the whole laptop.

Dont flap, nothing to worry about depends what you want to do. If it came with something like your HP recovery software I would use that, that would back up the laptop as it was new. Everything else your daughter wants backed up she would be better off coping on a USB stick or something, there is no need to make any of it difficult :)

When you get round to doing it, if you have MSN I can do it for you over MSN if you like and you can see what i do while i am doing it so you can do it next time

Also a better solution if you plan to do it regually, is to buy an external hard drive and back them both up to the same one and use it just for back ups.

that was the plan with daughters, just every time we manage to save something then something esle comes up, maybe a good pressie for xmas for her:thumbsup:

she has two hard drives on hers, one she uses normally and one she uses for her music and pics, could i use one external drive for both, sorry im not very techie:oops:

Ye syou can use 1 for both as long as its big enough, so if both laptops have 320GB each you would prob get away with a 500Gb as you prob wont use all the space on the Hard Drives. Iomega drives have a magic backup button you plug in and press the button and it jsut back the PC up
