Evening guys, I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card on my home computer to play a few new games i quite fancy!

I bought the PC around a year ago and haven't modified it in any way, and was looking for a half decent Card to start off with (i've been quoted 8600GT, if that makes any sense?)

Sorry to sound like a bit of a technical dinosaur, but I'm not sure where to turn ha ha.

I'd quite like the games World of Warcraft and Far Cry 2 to run at a good enough level to enjoy, and i have around £100-£150 to spend.

Your help would be greatly appreciated guys and girls.

Thanks Very Much

Nicky

Sorry to disappoint you but to run far cry 2 you will need at least a ati hd 4850 and then only at low settings,You would probably also need a new PSU with that card so you would be looking at nearly £170 ,Forget about the 8600gt that is nowhere near good enough to run far cry 2,

Could you suggest an alternative?

I dont really know what you mean about ati hd 4850 and PSU??

Keep it simple please!

An ATI hd 4850 will need a 500w PSU or power supply unit,Yours is more than likely a 350w PSU, A decent PSU will set you back approx £40 and the card would be approx £135,If you dont want to sepnd that much an ATI 4830 or nvidia 8800gt can be had for less than £100 and should work with a 400w psu so these may work with your original psu and if not you can get a 450w for £30,These 2 will play most games but may struggle with far cry 2 or crysis as these are two of the most demanding games but you should get by with the settings turned down,

When you decide how much you want to spend let me know and i will show you what is the best option for you,Just remember if you buy a new card and a PSU that you can always remove these when you sell your PC and either put them in your new pc or sell them seperate so they are not as much of a waste of money as they first seem,

Well i've just always fancied a gaming PC and wouldnt mind paying up to around 170-180 (as long as it plays mid range games (Max Payne, Half Life etc) at an enjoyable level.

Thanks for all your help by the way, i was going to take the PC into PC world and see what they could do with it, but would probably get ripped off.

If you got the 8800gt it would have no problem at all playing half life 2 and max payne and many other it is just Crysis and far cry 2 that graphics cards struggle with,i am running a 8800gt and get 100 fps on half life 2

Y'know, I'm seriously tempted to take this as my oppertunity to hawk my spare Sapphire 3870 Silent and Coolermaster 600w PSU. Hm. New, you;d be looking at £100 for the 3870 Silent and £60 for the PSU. £125, shipped?

Hi Dave,

Quite a lot of good advice there, what did you end up going for?

I imagine we both have the same PC, did you have any problems installing or did you need an extra power supply to plug in?

No idea if i have a PCI-E slot, but would like a pretty good card to be honest!

Repped for taking the time out to help!

I've just checked the prices, and that is a good offer mate. Will this run games with half decent graphics? and would it be compatable with the Dell Inspiron 531?

I'd deffinately be willing to take you up on the offer in a couple of days? (when my bills are paid!)

Cheers

Coolies.

In performance terms, it'll fly through pretty much anything you throw at it. World Of Warcraft it'll have no problem with, Far Cry 2, I expect it'll have no problem with either, but since I've got a system relatively similar to yours (Phenom 9750 quadcore 2.4GHz) and it's one of the reasons you want to upgrade, I'll bag a copy of the game and try it out tonight.

And a few days wait whilst your bills get paid is no problem - I've still got COD5 to finish off

Breaking the rules? Probably are at the moment, but no matter. I'm not 100% sure on how trades work when outside of the FS/Trade forum, so what I'll do after I've gotten back from my shower is make a new thread in the FS/Trade forum just for us. Even if it's not a requirement of the forum rules (which are here, although mercilessly long), doing it that way gives us both the chance to get some FS/T feedback points, plus a thread that won't get quickly lost amongst all the other other stuff in Misc.

What we'll do is, once you're alright for the money, PM me your address and I'll PM you photos of the gear, my eBay ID if you want to check out my eBay feedback, my mobile number, email address, and anything else you'd like before comitting. If all is to your satisfaction, PM me your house or office address and email address and PayPal Gift me the £125, and I'll take the gear down to the Edinburgh central sorting office and send it to you via Special Delivery, so it will be with you the following morning. I'll email you the tracking code so you can keep tabs on the item's travels through the country too.

All sounding good to yourself?

Hi Nicky

I went for this in the end:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152186

I bought it mainly for the other half so she could play the Sims 2 and it is working a treat. It took me about 10 minutes to install and it worked first time. I have never installed one before. Your PC will have one PCI-E slot as it is the same as mine. THe one I bought isn't too tall so it won't get in the way of anything. I have a PDF of the instructions of the PC we have if thats any help. I used it as it shows diagrams of the motherboard and even gives instructions how to install upgrades like graphocs cards etc. If you PM me your email address I can send them accross to you. Kind Regards David
