Whatever happened to Nokia?

Back in the day, Nokia was THE mobile of choice, you were nobody if you didnt have a nokia, everyone I knew had one, I knew they were going downhill when I went to work in Finland the home of Nokia, all my colleagues were impressed with my Windows 6 smartphone!!!! but nowadays everyone I know has either a HTC or an Iphone, the only person who I do know that has one is my mother, and thats because it was the only big buttoned jobby in the shop.

So do you care/agree?, Do you know what happened other than 2 newbies arrived on the mobile scene?, Can/will Nokia make a come back.

Can I just point out that a "big buttoned jobby" means something entirely different in Glasgow!

Nokia sell more handsets than any other brand.

Not saying they're any good, and everyone I know has a smartphone of some sort, but Nokia are still the biggest.

Symbian OS.

Just never cut it against Android or iPhone.

Phone i'm using now to post this is a nokia. Been around for 3yrs and still does a better job than an iphone.

I have an E72 and I love it

a Nokia 5800 before that, a 5610 before that and an N73 before that.

Nokia are big players imo

My partner is a fan of Nokia, he's had a Nokia every upgrade for the last 12 years plus however his last 3 Nokias have been crap!!! (Although he won't admit it) He's due for a renewal and I'm trying to steer him towards an HTC. He's actually waiting for a new Nokia to come on the market because he thinks they are going to be better...lol!!

Apart from everyone is laughing at you behind your back and thinking "what a **** phone. Must be a loser"

I love my Nokia, it's so easy to text with. Had a Samsung a couple of years ago and just hated the text set-up, not intuitive at all.

I think i want my ipad back. Lets be honest here apple stole all its ideas from nokia. Hence the reason for losing that patent law suit.

Nokia went downhill since the N95.
In my honest opinion... I feel they are capable of so much... but deliver so little.

I mean look at the new Nokia N8... its got everything that a good phone needs.. yet the only thing it excels in is the camera!

I have the new Nokia X3-02. great little phone. Uses S40 software so better Java apps.
But if you want a smart phone then better go with Android.

Nokia went downhill since the N95.In my honest opinion...
The N95 is awful, I was given one for free, it was so bad it sat in a drawer (where it still remains) after 2 weeks of having it, such a slow phone (even debranded), clunky menu system just generally crap, a delay to do simple things like open a text etc, and it's not just a one off, we have 3 of them and all did the same (given two for free, one was lost so got a new one from insurance, they all sucked).

I paid £485 for one of mine and it's fine. It must be the free ones. Or you.

Wifi/ Upnp/ 5 mega pixel camera (way ahead of it's time and what everything else wanted to be)

You should be thanking Nokia for the innovation they have delivered to the mobile market.

never experienced any issues with my N95 (8GB)
had 2 of them in my lifetime, and still think its one of the best handsets ive ever owned.

I own a galaxy S... and I still reminisce the 5mgp Carl Ziess lens.
It may 'feel' clunky... but it felt solid.

The E71/E72 phones are class leading imho.

I'm currently using an HTC HD2 under sufferance as my Nokia to a dive into the cistern.

I am about to try an HTC Desire HD and Desire Z to see how I get on with them, but the E72 is such a well resolved device for the serious functional user.

It's flaw is poor web support and no apps obviously.

I tend to see the Nokia devices as more hardcore than the consumer focussed ones :D

Nokia failed to move with the times, they're a cautionary tale for the modern era.

^Symbian was good for it's time. Fastest thing around but things move on and Nokia should just insist on using the same as Apple . They probably invented and paid for it already.

I still am using my 402 .. what is this talk of symbian and andy roid ?

I had an N95 8GB, while although a weak offering (basically a workable, usable N95) still works today.

Since then though... meh. The N73 was a nice phone too.

It seems that way, I forgot to mention Blackberry in my OP, but it does seem a 3 way street as far as mobiles are concerned. I would have thought they had a huge market share at its crashed big time. Just look at the symbian figures on this, sad times for the finnish boys.

I still use my Nokia 6300 as my main phone for personal use and I've purchased another one (a cheap refurbished one via Amazon UK) to replace a Nokia 6500 Slide, which died on me, that's going to be used for my work number (hell it would be handy for the agencies to phone me back so I can get a contract or a job sorted out! lol).

I love the 6300 handset series, as it's just great and it has a long battery runtime as well if you watch what your doing - plus it's great for doing quite backups and data syncs via the bundled Nokia software using a USB/Bluetooth connection...of course I'm old school! ;)

I also have an LG Optimus GT540 handset (purchased from the deal listed on here a while back, which is newly upgraded to Android 2.1) but that's primarily for checking emails and applying to new any contracts/staff positions that pop up on the internet.

Indeed had my n95 8gb for almost 3yrs. Its hacked to pieces got tons of cool apps on it. GPS etc etc brilliant phone that i only paid £99 for contract free.

People who judge others by the quality of their phone are the real losers.

I have remembered someone else who has a Nokia, a locksmith mate who always uses a 5100 as he is always dropping phones and that's the only one which he cant kill.

Just looked up their sales figures, and they are down 31% from last year and looks like the western world isnt going to be a valid market for much longer as they want to concentrate on emerging markets where the brand nokia still has sway!
#27
I have the Nokia N8, and the phone it self has the ability to be a good phone, but to be honest the new symbian^3 still has a few bugs, but it is much much better then the previous os.
Have to say the camera on the N8 is amazing!

I'm currently using an N900, has great reception, call quality and the screen is fully usable outdoors in bright sunlight. It was the first phone to ship with full Flash support and efore Apple had even announced Facetime, the N900 offered video chat over both Google and Skype. Unfortunately these days as the Iphone4 proved, people are less bothered about having a phone that works properly and prefer something flashy instead so it's no surprise Nokia don't appear as dominant as they used to be. However given they sell mor handsets than anyone else and still had rising prophets last year, I doubt they're too bothered about market perception.

I do have to say that Nokia's phones have some of the best cameras around.
If i could have a choice, it would be an Android phone with a Nokia camera.

I do miss big chunky buttons though :(
