Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Bit of a weird one to happen "all of a sudden" but are the settings correct? msg centre number etc? I take it the phone can still make/receive calls?

I agree with jtx, sounds just like the msg centre number has been changed/erased

Can probly be fixed with a 30sec call to your operator and ask for the msg (mms and SMS) settings to be sent to her phone.

Just backup everything to PC and do a reset

She remembers looking at calendar options earlier that day, she might unknowingly have messed with the settings. Making/receiving calls all ok.

I suggest you use the Nokia PC Suite to back contacts, messages and photographs up to a PC if they are important just for peace of mind - a rather straight forward process. I have the standard N95 and can back up to memory card. Good luck.

I've just got my N95 8GB back today from the O2 shop. It had the exact same problem and my old N95 did it too and had to go away. The guy said it is a common fault and in my case it would send and receive multimedia but not ordinary texts.

The centre number was not wrong and had not been altered, the memory was not full even though the phone said it was, the firmware was up to date and I even allowed them to try a hard reset but nothing worked. I advise backing up what you can and then just take it into the nearest shop instead of wasting any more time when it is a common fault.

happened to me... remove message centre no, then put it back in... sorted me out!
