Its free, it has regular updates (also free), its much less obtrusive than Nortons, it doesnt strain the resources of your computer and its free.

A perfect product I may say.

NOD32 or Kaspersky.

Common sense.

Free Avg is good but you do miss some features, Kaspersky is one of the best rated anti viruses available, good on resources, daily updates and excellent deep scanning. you can pick Kaspersky internet security full version including software firewall for under £10 at most pc shops eg: scan computers.

Whats wrong with Norton? Using it for 7 years, never had a single problem, quietly sits in the background, bloks all sorts of viruses and intrusions, whilst others just bombards you with anoying alert pop-ups and did not protect you, just puts image they do,but in real life its just b******t. And remember-nothing comes for FREE,so these free antivirus programs are just rubbish, some of them even collects info from your computer. You can believme or not-its your choice. I have 12 years expierence in IT.

Most of the AV software that is free is only free for home use, they do charge for companies to use it, so if it was that bad companies would not use it.

The Sep 2007 edition of PC Pro did a review of AV software.

AVG got 83% (free version) and Norton (£40) got 78%. About Norton they said "A big name in antivirus, but a poor performer in our tests".

Top was Kaspersky (£28) with 98%, then Avira AntiVir (free) with 92%. Norton was third from bottom.

So much for your startement that free AV software is rubbish.

Seriously, you are in the wrong job then mate as you havent a clue what you are talking about. I just love people trying to justify buying things that everyone else gets for free. Norton is universally accepted as a massive resource hog and is consistently low rated even against all the 'free rubbish' like AVG, Avast etc.

Google is your friend :-D

Avast is excellent and doesn't hog lots of memory.
I wouldn't use anything else.

what did you use for the other 5 years, end of the day it's personal preference, what works best for you, if you are someone that looks on every website, opens all their emails regardless of who it's from then you would need an exceptional antivirus, but if you are a clever user you could almost get away without using one.
I used norton for several years(subscribed), ran a scan a few years back with another anivirus and it found things that norton didn't,that was enough to put me off.I don't believe the other antivirus invented them either.

Trying to sell Extended Uber Million Year Warranties to PC World customers does not equate to "12 years experience in IT. You haven't got a clue what you're talking about.

They have stopped this now. I was lucky enough to get kaspersky for free. beats AVG/Avira for intrusion/resource hogging IMO.

Well said that man!

I couldnt believe someone with 12 years of 'IT' experience would ever recommend Norton.

I have been a computer contractor for 20 years and never come across a company using norton as its just rubbish. Some have tried it but soon got rid of it.

Then again, a lot use Mcafee and we all know thats nearly as bad.
