I'd avoid doing your own thing to be honest. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment and it's not as much fun as you probably think.

Not having a go, but if you can't stick out a job you don't like then you'll really struggle keeping you own business afloat as you can't just treat it willy nilly. It's 24hr work if you want to earn the money.

It's fine once your established and have already earnt the money but it's a lot of stress getting to that point so you can pick and choose and take it easy. :)

Yer thanks - i suppose i just want a little extra cash - i tried to start something up on ebay and i sold dvds i bought for liek £4 for like £8 but then when i started to work it out i was paying £1.50 in fees and postage and after selling over 100 things i only made about £25 profit

I really did hate the job one person who started with ym quit as well the week before as they hated it and 2 other people are quitting as the jobs awful

I didnt like the job after day 1 but i stuck it out for a month which i suppose i do deserve some credit for - but i should have found a new job before quitting i know

My only idea atm is a magic 8ball thing you pay 10p and you ask it a question

Thought maybe it would add up if loads of ppl did it

But then paypal fees would make it pointless

I think realyl i need to make the business digital only its thinking what will sell

And of course, you declared that to the tax man. :whistling:

A business is a whole new ball game to a quick buying and selling. Tax is a major consideration. Everyone wants to earn extra cash, but there is no easy way or else everyone would be doing it. Why would anyone post on here to you, or anyone else, a good idea that they could use themselves?

One day I will run my own business, and I have already have several activities that I could get involved in. However, time is not right for me yet to go into something like that so I continue to earn other people money.

A game website would be very hard, there are already so many esbtablished businesses in the UK at the moment. You will need a very good website to ensure people that you are legit and give them the impression of a proper business.

Best ways to start a business?

Well first decide what you want to sell. :giggle:

Next research your market, try to gauge your likely turnover, costs and profits. Be honest about this! Underestimate T/o, overestimate costs. There's absolutely no point being overly optimistic at this stage.

How much is it going to cost to set up? Do you have the money or will you have to borrow.

If you'll have to borrow then you need as accurate profit and cashflow forecast as you can to present to banks.

How do you plan on trading? As a sole trader or a Limited company. Both have pro's and cons and you will need to weigh up these carefully.

Its worth seeing an accountant for advice. Most will give a short free introduction session if you will use them in the future. This is really a must if you plan on raising finance unless you feel very confident with your figures and ability to present them to the bank.

The last thing you need is luck! Most business fail in the first year

I studied business at gcse and a level and its like 95% of business fail in the first year and its real tough - if i could come up with something ingenious i would do a whole cash flow forcast- break even charts the whole shebang

I was thinking maybe sell loads of those mini helicopters in a shopping centre for like £20 making £3 on each -its hard to come upwith something

Its an ok idea but tbh it wouldnt be worth my while as id only be accepting paypal otherwise id have to pay to take cards

Selling dvds etc is kind of hard as we all know it can be found cheaper elsewhere - but one thing i wouldnt use royal mail -- my dad suggested me and him did a little father son venture in catalogue deliveries and goods (obv not littlewoods :-D )

But he retires from the police in 4 months and that a tad long to wait being unemployed (not going on the jsa this time )

What about this

A website where you enter a person age - likes dislikes etc what they are into and it gives you a list of gifts that would be suitable for them and lists the lowest online prices

A sort of bespoke gift finder

Good for christmas- mothers day- fathers etc

And i get a commisions from the sites sort of similar to how hukd get it

But then how would i find out how much commisions id get etc
Those confused.com and car insurers do it for insurance and im sure they make tons of money as they are advertising on tele all the time

My twopenneth is go learn a trade, carpentry, plumbing, decorating, any of that sort. Work hard and learn for about 2/3 years. Get any qualifications you can along the way through day release or night school.

When you are happy and confident in yourself go out on your own. Keep learning, don't appear on Rogue Traders, in a relatively short time you will have a very nice standard of living.

Good luck :)

Nice idea. Look on Quidco for the amount of commision you'd be looking at receiving.

I have many an idea about comparision websites, ones that I know aren't in the market. But - can you set up a website, scripts, servers or whatever that can do that because I can't! It's a MASSIVE project to do a comparison website.

I thought up an idea for that dragons den thingy and i emailed the guy off it my idea was

An lcd door sign for kids rooms where they could hook it up to a pc and drag and drop what they want to put on it e.g animations or something

And maybe released disney ones with like disney charactors on a cd to put on the doorsign - e.g daniel room and like nemo and genie on it with

But they rejected my idea saying it wasnt feasible so again dropped that even though i though it was good and would appeal to any market - also be good for like doctors waiting room and it could say like on doctors door saying whos in it for an appointment and be good and fun

But heres to hoping on an idea

Anyone here think its a good idea for like the kids room or an office etc

no business you start now will give you good profit straight away, it takes time to build, esp an online one, you have to do a lot of promo etc, in fact, i can pretty much guarruntee it will be more than 4 months before you see profit

Rofl, great second line addman! The algorithms for this would be complex to code, else everyone would end up getting the same few things recommended. An extension of your (pretty good) idea would be an 'i can't be bothered' website- the buyer selects a present from your 'gifts for dad' 'gifts for mum', pays you for it, and you wrap and send it for them.

The biggest problem is getting the website out there. I can turn a website from 'new' to a legitimate 500,000 hits per year with two months and £4000- but you can do the same with a bunch of printed flyers and a lot of legwork. Visit businesses and shops, network with the bosses, and think laterally- YouTube, Facebook, and ebay can be used in innovative ways for very little money to publicise your venture.

I'm currently in the process of starting my first business- I have secured funding from the Welsh Assembly and am building websites and visiting my potential clients until Christmas for a January launch. I've been lucky in getting my wages and the two girls i'm employing paid (via the WAG) for the first nine months- but i'll not make any money in the first year, i'm sure of that!

NB the lcd sign- make a few (adapt a lcd pictureframe, i'm sure you'll find the software as freeware somewhere online) preload them and sell them on ebay. I'm sure that could make you a couple of grand from a £500 investment over the next month. Good thing is, if it fails, you'll be able to sell the picture frames for a similar amount to what you paid for them anyway. Let us know how you get on pal.

My Doctor's surgery has an LCD screen up in the waiting room that beeps and displays a name and what room you have to do go when the Doctor is ready to see you, seems like the same sorta thing and i'm sure its not the only Doctor's surgery in the country with it.

LOLnot that i meant for the door of the doctors - this would only be aimed at kids for their rooms

I always had a sign on ym door with drawing on and messages but i suppose taking it to whole new level of customization

I cant judge it as its my idea but does anyone think its any good

I might contact hasbro or something and tell them the idea - its not on the market or anything similar

Id buy it just stick it on your door with like gears of war and halo etc on it save printing it lol

Those lcd frames are really expensive as they show a really vivid picture - something low cost - i might have a lookie on ebay

£18+vat at the wholesellers near me... you'd probably need to register your business (£30) and open a business acct (free) to get an account though, but it's all good experience- think of going to a job interview in two years time and when they ask what you've done over the previous couple of years: "Well, I ran my own business which was purchased from me for £100000..."

As for telling Hasbro, it's only a good idea to take a product to a large manufacturers if you have the product rights, prototypes, and are willing to take a 'per unit' fee.

Only prob you've got with the LCD doorsign is copyright issues, ie you shouldn't really put GoW on it without asking and paying... but if I saw a Bob the Builder doorsign that I could customise to my godson's name that played animations on ebay for £50, i'd go for it. Maybe only install 'free to download' screensavers etc from the relevant websites. Whilst it may be strictly against the licence of the screensaver, you're still acting ethically.

I know - thats what i mean the potential is unlimited - so many kids programs of course you could just get the jpg yourself and do it but its for kids so its all their for them

I was gunna patent the idea but its too expensive if the idea is crapola

I really need some person in this kind of field to help me

Anyone on here know anything about patents or product ideas
#27
Too easy a patent to get around- a picture frame that shows a character and has mounting points for a door. If you remember the iTeddy on Dragon's Den, they were really suprised that the guy had managed to patent the concept of putting an mp3/mp4 player in a soft toy. Bet he spent over £50000 getting that patent to stick in the first place.

Hmmn, can I link to my latest business venture here or is it self publicizing under site rules? Funny thing is we make no money from it, it's just about expanding the network of people we work with... mods?

Yer but is the idea worth patenting - i mean anyone could copy it - the patent wouldnt hold up --- as anything can be put on an lcd screen

Would have to be specific like a lcd screen hung on door or wall that displays images that are customized on the computer

Just sent the idea to that guy

your own business isnt limited to buying and selling, trade is the way to go. people will always need electricians, plumbers, builders, decorators etc etc.

That would potentially increase competition.;-)

never too late to start learning.

I started my apprentiship at 17 got them to pay may way through college, ok your first year wage aint great, I was looking at around 8K pa stuck it out (you do get an increase every year) finished my 4 years with HNC in mechanical engineering, not to mention the experience, left that place. at 22 I set up my own limited company and now contract my 3D modelling and design services out to the bigger companys at a current rate of £28 per hour, that makes me over 60k per year, but also have the benefit of not being a high rate tax payer because I employ my missus so she's an additional shareholder, pay her a percentage of my dividends and that keeps us both under the higher tax rate threashold.

plus the added benefits of being VAT registered.

All you need is something similar and your laughing, rates in my line of work are always going up if i could be bothered heading back down south I could be picking up around £45 per hour.

im soory but your contradicting yourself slightly

you dont want to wait 4 months to work with your dad cos you need a wage?

you think your way will get you a wage before then?

get an education, you will need business nous, for anyone to take you seriously, business plans etc

do it now whilst your still with your parents, you dont know how well off you are
