There are essentially two versions of the Xbox, the older one does not have hdmi whereas the newer one does. The main difference is in bundled accessories, the Arcade/Core does not come with a component (HD) cable, headset or hard drive, the Premium/Pro (Premium is the older one without hdmi, Pro is the newer one with hdmi) comes with a 20GB hard drive, headset and combined component/composite cable but not hdmi or audio breakout, the Elite has the 120GB hard drive, headset, component/composite cable, hdmi cable and the audio breakout.

the pro is the newer verison of the premium, the pro comes with pretty much the same new cooling system as the elite, so as to not over heat and get the 3 red lights or "ring of death". if you have a choice between the premium and the pro, and they cost the same, then always go for the pro, comes with the same stuff but the console itself is better slightly. hope this helps

If you want to play original Xbox games on your 360 you need to buy a 360 with a hard drive (ie Premium/Pro or Elite)...

The elite is fine - you'll be able to play old xbox games (you need to download the emulator software) and you be fine playing DVDs.....

Not all xbox games are compatible - there is a list here
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm

The FAQ on the above page also tells you more about how to download the software if you don't have an xbox live account.

Your son will work it all out and he'll love his pressie!!
