Seems my first was 1995-1996, when I was 14-15 using AOL 3.0 I chatted with people from the states and I became penpals with two girls from California. Not anymore I'm married btw :o Was using a 486 DX 33Mhz but I upgraded to a DX 2 to give me double the Mhz :)

we had the same, it used to cut itself off after 2 hours, I think with a BT dial up modem then went to Screamimg Net,I was stung for nearly £200 once as we had a rouge dialer install its self & my modem was dialing out on a premium rate number !

I guess it was 1998, as Windows98 had just been released. I remember none of my friends had a computer yet, and I always used to get in trouble for going on games which used up to much of the internet. Only allowed on after 5pm or something when it was cheaper...

I think the computer cost my Dad over £1k. Ridiculous now...

And to think I moan about the internet being slow now!

Haha... there were loads of those hijack dialers out there. They must be gutted with broadband!

The worst I got stung for was about 10 hours. I had the usual cut off in place, but was on "www.liveonsat.co.uk" or something similar, which refreshed the page for football scores every 15 seconds or so. I learnt after that to disconnect rather than just walk away.

My first IBM PC was bought in March 1994. A Dell 486DX266 and cost £1200. It had an 40MB hard drive, 4MB or ram and the masterclass of a 2 speed CD Rom, which cost another £200 on top! (Bought just to play a game called "The 7th Guest"... anyone remember that one?) Upgraded with a Matrox graphics card for £200 also! And a super 14" colour CRT¬ too die for!

Those were the days! X)

But that was a bargain compared to the £300 I paid for a 5 1/4 inch floppy drive for my BBC Micro!

There isnt a person alive (or lived) who could beat me at Chuckie egg. X)

I'm trying to work out when I first got broadband. I know the roll out start date with BT was 1 October... think it may have been 98, but not confident. I do know, my install date was 4 October, so one of the first 1000 in the country to get broadband. (A whopping 512K connection) I've always loved gadgets! :p

I would get round all 27 levels and keep going from the beginning again with just a couple of waking birds to avoid. I only stopped for a poo or sleep! :p

95ish for the proper internet, used BBS on the Amiga before that. It used to be that you paid your ISP a sub a month then a further 1-5p a minute to use it dependent on time of day/day of week. Freeserve changed all that. Remember being away with the army 97-98 time and coming home and we had broadband, wow I was impressed.

Cant remember, but know I was using college internet in 1998 and my first real internet for myself was the Dreamcast in 2000, then ONnet from OnDigital, then got one of those set top boxes(still have a sealed one) but never used it as it was so bad.

Got my first laptop around 2000/2001 and was on internet then, back in the Freeserve days(at parents)

First broadband was Orange 1 meg in 2004 and got 8 meg in 2006, and 20 meg in 2007! lol.

So I live in the middle of nowhere in sussex and guess what... MY TELEPHONE EXCHANGE STILL DOESN'T HAVE BROADBAND. If I want to connect to the internet I use the classical 56k modem or attempt to get some 3g signal...
The sound of my modem dialing still haunts me most days.... oO
