When and where to get a job?

GreenLanternGreenLantern

I am currently a 16 (17 soon) year old student in college, and I was wondering when to start applying for jobs? I would like them to be after my exams finish (may) so it doesn't disrupt me preparing for them.
I would also like to know where you think I should apply for, I am going to aim for retail but they do not seem to have a lot of vacancies, so I was wondering what type of jobs I'll have the most success in?
Thanks for any help!

    "Aim High" I think.

What are you doing at college? If it's a vocational course can you get something to do with the course you are doing?

Ohh I don't mean I want to do retail as my future career, I mean for the time being as I don't think you really need much qualifications, think they prefer experience.
And I do Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Economics, so I doubt I could do anything in those fields yet.

So A'Levels, Why don't you skip the next few years, get £30k worth of debt from hookers and get a job at Starbucks.

    Saves the hassle...

    :D

Just apply now, might take a while to get one sorted. Exams start reasonably soon anyway don't they?

A lot of shops just stick an advert in their window when they are looking for part-time/temporary staff.
    Slash
Go into the shops when its not busy and ask to speak to the manager and/or submit your cv if its retail.

Get your cv into shops now, April is a good time for retail, if not September. There are done recruitment companies who do part time jobs as well. Above all ask your relatives. It's more who you know than anything and just hope you get lucky.

If fees hadn't just been shafted up I'd of recommended higher education and a part time job, these days positions you could have walked into with decent A levels a decade ago are asking for a degree/HND as a minimum. The un-skilled/un-qualified don't stand a chance in this climate competing with immigrants who will work twice as hard for half the money. Its **** up big time.

Are you looking for a full time job ie a career or the start of one. Or a part time job to earn a bit of money. If your after something full time speak to your college career people about an apprenticeship. Monies not good at first but it gets you in to a job and qualifications with no debt. Engineering companies are crying out for them and despite what doom and gloomers say the specialist engineering sector of the economy is very strong at the moment.
Part time or just to get into work, retail, hospitality (hotels etc) or bar work. Also if theres something that interests you send an e-mail and ask if you can do some experience or a days volunteering. It all looks good on a CV. Best of luck.

you need to be looking now, ask in shops, speak to people you know etc,etc do not leave it until after your exams that's when everyone will be looking. My daughter had a saturday job from 15 she just asked around and dropped lucky, good luck

Look in the local newspapers,on websites such as jobcentreplus...have you made a CV yet? You can't be too fussy, just saying,...even a paper round is something.

I'd try your town centre for shops. Also try any bars/pubs you can think of. Have you asked your parents if they have any friend who might be able ti get you some work. My advice is go for anything and everything. Even if you go to an interview and don't take it. Job interview experience is very useful. Even if you go in skeptical after the interview you might decide its the job for you. Good hunting.

applied for McDonalds a few weeks ago and got the job within a week :p

wasn't the best time to get a job with my exams starting in a month and not much revision done, but it makes a bit of money so not too bad.
