Sorry meant direct2drive D2D.

Steam = best
D2D + some other one forgot which = second best.

Steam is the most featured certainly, whether you think their aggressive use of those features is good or not determines whether you think they're best or worst.

As for digital distribution services the four main ones seem to be GamersGate, Impulse, Direct2Drive and Steam. I favour GamersGate myself since it's just a no-nonsense installer download and uses standard retail patches with no aggressive steam client or waiting to get it patched. I still prefer retail for most games since they're usually cheaper and patches are well done (all of the Digital Distribution systems have patching problems AFAIK) but gamersgate is my service of choice when publishers are using a disk check only DRM solution on the retail version.

There is also the various metaboli based services like Gamesplanet and Game but as far as I know they limit you to three downloads which is completely unacceptable for me.

There are also quite a few specialised one like EA Store/EA Download Manager for EA Games, Matrix for Strategy Games, Good old Games for old classics (and a lot of stuff that's aged badly) and a couple of subscription services like Metaboli itself where you have access to all their games as long as you pay a monthly fee. There are also quite a few game studios like positech games and spiderweb software their allow their games to be bought and downloaded via their site.

Cant see why anyone would download a game unless it is considerably cheaper. Its worthless once downloaded compared to a shop bought physical version. Which explains why software companies are so keen to go down the download only route.

Dont buy into it!

Most PC games bought from a shop are useless when used once anyway, CoD MW2 now I used the cd key, I can bin the packaging and disks because they're usess and never needed again.

what nonsense. Think about it next time and just use a unique registration account which you sell with the game :whistling:
