Where do I get an accredited engineer report?

I have an elliptical from Argos that has just broken....15 days out of warranty :( The main upright bar has basically snapped/become detached from the base making it unstable and unusable.

Just been in touch with Argos and they say that as it's out of warranty I will have to get an accredited engineers report and send it to them and then IF a manufacturing fault is found they will discuss the next step with me.

It all sounds a bit airy fairy, they aren't even saying they will refund/replace. Do you think I'd be throwing my money away if I actually got one done?

And does any one know where exactly I would find someone to do it and what sort of price I'd be looking at?

Thanks.

Bloody 15 days out of warranty *grumble*

Try at your local university, either direct with the engineering dept or ask if there is a consultancy division and they should be able to help you out.

Costs vary enormously from £50 upwards depending on what tests are needed, how many staff involved and the length of report writing.

I used to live with someone who worked for Argos, up until I moved out (July) they had to believe the customer bought the item from there if they didnt have a reciept ONLY IF someone else says they were present at the time of purchase and witnessed it.......I say up until July as I havent heard anything since, so not sure if they have changed their policies or not but worth a try.....the person obviously didnt have to be there, just be willing to say they were

Wow that much? Was expecting maybe £20 :?

Sounds like it's not even going to be worth my while (I can buy a new one for £90), it's obviously happened because unlike a lot of people who buy these things I have actually used it most days over the last year and it's just not up to being used that much - but would that be a manufacturers fault?

Thanks for the advice re taking it back and 'forgetting' my receipt, unfortunately I don't drive and even if I could get someone to take me I am not sure it'd fit in a car - it's a big heavy thing - so it'd be a massive job/inconvenience to do it if the result is as likely to be that they won't refund any way. Worth knowing and considering though.

Thanks all.

Why not contact the manufacturer of the product?

Can you provide a photo of the product just for reference? Thanks.

They don't sell it any more on Argos it seems, it's very similar to this one though:

The one I have is the version before that I guess as it's the "Kirsty Gallacher X Train KG-10211"

I would imagine that the weld has snapped. This would suggest a poor weld joint or metal fatigue which would be a manufacturing fault.

2 suggestions I can offer:

a) Check your household insurance to see if you have legal expenses cover. If you have, get them to handle this for you (this will not affect your no claims discount & there will be no excess to pay).
b) You may be able to get an engineers report from a car repair bodyshop if you explain the circumstances. They may do this for you for 'a drink'. If this doesn't work, they may even be able to fix (weld) the joint back for you for a small fee.

The link you show comes with a 2 year guarantee - is it just over 2 years old?
May also be worth speaking to someone from another branch to see if you get better joy.

Thanks for the advice, my dad has had a look at it now and he said the same as you....the weld snapped (he's not an expert, but he knows things...cos ya know, he's a dad!).

This one is just over a year old, but I already had it replaced once and my original order was Feb 2008 - but having looked back at all my original stuff from when I ordered it I see no mention of guarentee at all (it is a different one to the one pictured so may have only been 1 year...).

I am going to contact them again now and ask them to double check how long my guarentee was for as their other Kirsty stuff has 2 years on it and also explain further that the fault is that the weld has snapped - I originally just said that the main upright bar had snapped.

Thanks.

So, I'm still on with this.

So far I have had 3 different people tell me 3 different things, the first was that I needed the engineers report, the second said they were happy to replace and the 3rd said I would need to contact the manufacturers *head desk*

They're certainly not keen to sort it out for me.

I can't find ANY information on where to contact the manufacturers, I can't see the sense in the hassle and expense of the report cos if they come back and still won't replace it I am screwed so am at a bit of a loss now.

Is it acceptable for Argos to say "yes it has a 2 year guarantee...but we only cover the 1 year, for the 2nd year you have to contact the manufacturer"?

Take it in to a store on Saturday. They'll have a queue so if you create a stink, it will upset people behind & cause a bad vibe. They're more likely to do something for you then. Let them send it to the manufacturers for repair. The weld shouldn't snap under any circumstances so don't be afraid.

Have convinced my dad to take me tomorrow (I don't drive), I am not very good at this sort of thing but hoping that as you say they will be so busy they will just want to get rid of me.

The other elliptical that was £199 is now down to £99 (which is what I paid for this one) so hoping they will do a straight swap or if not offer me £99 argos vouchers which I will use right away to buy it any way.

Fingers crossed.

I don't think Argos understand what they mean by an accredited engineer, as good as it sounds. You should perhaps ask them what they mean. A chartered member of the institute of mechanical engineers (IMechE) would be able to help, however, they would not do that sort of work since the hourly rate for something which could turn into a legal case is too large.

You could get somebody that hasn't qualified as an engineer but calls themself an engineer to look at it and try to work out what has happened.

Went today. After many refusals they agreed to replace it...they wouldn't take it instore though as they said they don't do that with online orders so had to bring it home with me. They are collecting and sending a replacement next Monday...had to pay £5.80 delivery but hey ho, better than having to pay £100 for a new one :)

Thanks for the advice ya'll :)
