Me and few friends booked to go on a hikinh trip...for this november, Today i got the call that our trip had re-arranged for January.
We cant make it to the january trip and they have refused to refund me my money £560.00 in total and have been told that i have to make the new date.
Where do i stand and do you have any advise?

How did you pay for it? Credit card? Visa debit card? Do you have annual travel insurance?

If you have booked for a specific date and had an acknowledgement, then you have a contract that the company will provide a holiday of the contracted type, on the contracted dates and at the contracted price.

Point out to them that, if they refuse to do that they will be in breach of contract and your remedy is to go into the marketplace and obtain the nearest possible equivalent and hold them liable for any difference in price, in court if necessary. You can say that, as an alternative, you would accept a full refund.

This is very similar to something I did a few years back. I'd booked a specific holiday at a particular price and had the booking accepted. The holiday company tried say they had made a mistake in the pricing and asked me to pay more. I pointed out that we a contract that the company would provide a holiday of the contracted type, on the contracted dates and at the contracted price. I pointed out I would go into the marketplace and obtain the nearest possible equivalent and hold them liable for any difference in price, in court if necessary.

After a few weeks of letters going back & forth, they caved in, and I got my holiday to the tune of £1600 less than they'd tried to get.

So: go for it. Make sure everything is in writing and use registered/signed-for mail. If they say something, ask them to confirm it in a letter. Keep dated notes as well.

Which? Legal service helpline were quite useful (About £10 for 3 months)

The way I read it is: The trip has been re-arranged for January, but not by the travel agent or whoever he booked it with, maybe his mates have re-arranged the date. Confusing or what.

If they give you hassle I would contact the bank and request a chargeback.
As mentioned previously though I believe this may only be applicable to Mastercard and Visa Debit.

If it is a reputable or even semi-reputable company I reckon they would give the refund if you make a big enough fuss over it.
