Where do you get sashimi grade fish?

Right don't laugh! I have major urge for sashimi nothing exotic just like salmon and tuna really : ) ......but I can't just pick some raw fish up at Sainsburys from the deli counter and slice it up can I? I read somewhere that sashimi grade fish has to be frozen for a certain period of time to kill the germs and it's best to buy farmed salmon (for raw consumption) because they don't have ring worm or something. Help much appreciated!

As with all fish, buy the freshest and the best quality you can afford.
Avoid the supermarket fish counter and source a good local fishmonger, who will be able to give you plenty of advice.

Yeah thanks for that, trouble is I don't have a dedicated local fishmonger unfortunately... loads of butchers no fishmongers though... there is a market that comes around once a week and people say they get all sorts from the fishmonger there and say he's very good...only I've strolled by a couple times and I just find the smell unbareable (like way too fishy in a bad way not a fresh sea type smell) and I absolutely love all things seafood...maybe I need to give him a shot.

Also thanks for that link. I'm one of those weird people that never does food shopping online though, but thanks anyway.

Do you have a mobile fishmonger in the area?, that's what I rely on seeing as I am landlocked here in West Yorks. I discovered him by asking at a local restaurant where they get their fish from, as there are no decent fishmongers here either.

I have a good relationship with my Waitrose fishmonger, they let me know what fish is fresh in that day. Just ask nicely.

Whereabouts are you based? There might be a Seawoo Chines Supermarket near you. These are proper Chinese supermarkets, not like your typical Chinese food shop that's basically just the size of a large newsagents. They're the size of your average Sainsbury's or Waitrose, and they feature amazing things, like tanks full of live tunafish and lobsters. These will all be sashimi-grade.

I know there's a branch in Glasgow, and another in London. Might be one near where you are, too. If not, it's well worth a two hour drive. I discovered the Glasgow one by accident, and nearly died of happiness as I strolled around inside.

They do have some live fish in the Croydon Wing Yip, but I've never bought it so can't vouch for the quality. Might be worth giving them a ring. They do seem to cater to all Asian tastes, not just Chinese.
