You will need to go the general register office in your area, and get them to find you a proper copy.

With mine and the kids I had to apply to the Registry office I was registered under.
Like my DD was registered at Weston super mare, We live in swansea so I hoped I could do it local.
I had to do it over the phone at Weston.
I am still yet to do mine up in stockport due to they wont take the request over the phone.

Are you local to where you were registered at birth?

costs about £8 and takes about an hour

oh for a passport you also need a FULL birth certificate, So as long as the duplicate is a full one then you will be fine :)

I managed to do mine by post from Birmingham's registry office. I had to send off a cheque for about £12 I think, and then they posted it to me. I had a duplicate before which was printed in red at the bottom saying it was duplicate but this one looks like an original- no red writing etc so I think I could use it for a passport if I needed to.

Not sure if this helps... clicky

you cannot get an 'original' birth certificate. The certified copy when you are born is your 'original' certificate, once this is lost you can get other certified copies which are basically exactly the same and will serve the same purpose, but are not classed as an 'original'.

When you go to the register office they will photocopy the original birth entry and create a new certificate for you.

edit. always get the full, the price difference is only about £2.

Oh yeah, what a rip off for a renewal.

To renew an adult ten-year 32-page passport costs £77.50 for standard service, £112.50 for the one-week Fast Track Service and £129.50 for the one-day Premium service. If you were born on or before 2 September 1929 your passport is free of charge, but you will need to pay the extra fee for Fast Track or Premium services if you use them.

£77 apparently. ouch. you will need to get someone to sign you photo if you have changed your appearence a great deal. eg. long to short hair, grown a beard, started wearing an eye patch, etc.....

I renewed my passport last year and didn't need to present my birth certificate ......
#16
for a renewal you only need your old passport and two pics plus the fee
