Depends what you want, i got this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-50mm-F1-8-Lens-Mk11/dp/B00006H1R6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1231189541&sr=8-1

for christmas, and i'm super pleased with it. I also have a kit lense which i'm hoping to upgrade to an IS version soon, they're not cheap though.

right this is going to sound a bit mad but i saw this

http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/312174/canon-5d-24-105mm-100-400mm-for-an-/showthread.php?t=312174&page=2
i know it is £2k but i am thinking the lenses are approx £1600 on their own so i would be getting the body of this camera for about £3-400 more than the 450d

any thoughts

thanks in advance

if you have that sort of money to spend on a camera, go for it. But. Its a professional camera, would you really need what it does?

The 5D is full frame, so when you use a 18mm lens, you get 18mm. With the Crop cameras (like the 450d) you get 18mm x1.6 - So you actually zoom in a little closer. This may be better for you in the long run while you are learning. I would recommend the 40d before the 5d for its 6fps, which I dont think the 5d has, i may be wrong tho.

What I would do is get the 450d body only, and sort out a 17-85 lens. That is gonna be about £600 I think. 17-85 is a lovely lens, it has its faults, but for the money. Its great. Then, in the future get hold of the usm version of the 75-300 lens. Its a nice piece of glass for the money.

The lenses on that deal are amazing, but you need to make sure they are good 'copies' .. if they aint, they will need to be sent back. Ordering a lens like that online is a bit of pot luck because even some of the top lenses can be a bit off focus etc.

Also, if you have a little money to spend on lenses, make sure you do.

If you really want to be confused, google fm reviews. This website reviews most of the lenses. And has sample images. which are really cool.

The kit lenses are usually very bad compared to spending £300 on a lens, you will be shocked.

What would you recommend to replace my kit lense with? The length is ok, just a bit soft. Is IS/USM crucial?
