Evening all....

So next weekend I've told the girlfriend we're going on a trip, well actually she told me but that I had to book somewhere as a surprise.

So I though it's been 5 years it's gotta be time to shut up the family and do the right thing, stick a ring on the girls finger (ever the romantic)....

So where should I Go? I just shelled out £1500 on a platinum ring so am now broke, can manage about £1000 all in for 3-4 days....was thinkin new york but after paying for flights and hotel leaves nothing so maybe europe, I had barcelona in mind....

Any ideas?

barcelona - cheap flights, posh hotel either that or canary islands if she is into her sunshine - there is a little hotel in puerto rico on the canaries called casablanca, good reviews and sounds so romantic to me! just pop it into ask.co.uk search engine - is affordable too. nice to know romance isn't dead!

Definately Milan or Rome if you want europe, some really nice and upmarket 5* hotels and not at all expensive, flights are about £100 return, thou you could go buisness class to add a bit extra class.

I'm afraid that all of these fine people are well-meaning, but wrong. :p

Venice, my friend, or, if you prefer less water, Florence.

Trouble is that the pound is on its knees compared with the Reichmark, sorry, Euro. But for sheer romance, in Europe, you can't beat those two places.

If you have the readies, you can shell out an eye-watering sum on a gondolier ride (a few years ago it was about £70 for half an hour) but for a romantic gesture that she'll remember forever, it can't be beaten.

Bonne chance, mon ami. I wish you great good fortune and happiness, whatever you choose to do.

That's why I put the emoticon after my statement; I was trying to be amusing. Sorry if it missed the mark. Of course a subjective opinion can't be wrong.

Venice is ok if you like stroppy waiters, rats, and a stinking canal system, I couldn't think of any where less romantic. £100 Gondalier trip no ta

I proposed in Barca, in the Gothic quarter, a great week was had.

The following weekend we went down to Brums jewellery quarter to buy a ring, saved a fortune on high street prices.

Where the blazes in Venice did you stay? When we went there we encountered not one stroppy waiter nor one rat (not unless you count the gondoliers and their admittedly mad pricing). And the canals, for the most part don't stink. Some niff a bit, but in my recollection, there are parts of France that niff just as badly from poor drainage.

The only downside to Venice, in my opinion, is that the food is uncharacteristically poor for Italy. In order to have a reasonable quality meal you have to shell out a lot of money. Compared with Rome and Florence their cuisine doesn't make the grade.

But for sheer wow factor, Venice is hard to beat. Its national treasures alone are worth the visit, but even if you're not a museum hound, it's gorgeous.

And I'd get there soon if you have any desire to see it, because in a few years it's going to be under water. Go in the summer when the rainfall is limited, because in the winter St Marks Square is often under water.

i suppose if you get a great hotel the actual place isn't too important.

How about Amsterdam for Europe-me mate went there last year and really enjoyed it. Or Marrakech for further afield?

Expedia have some good deals-flights and posh accomadation for around £1000, less for other hotels............she'll love whatever you do-just have fun !

Morning all, thanks for all the advice..... We go to europe quite a lot (cos I'm scared of flying, so we drive) and we've done Rome, Venice, Croatia, Paris....She does love Venice and Croatia so was thinking there but then I thought she'd maybe like something different?

I heard at the top of some mountain in barcelona is supposed to be majestic
