avg is the most popular free antivirus software

AVG - it's free as well.
Also use a cookie cleaner like c-cleaner.
Also ad-aware - gets rid of all the stuff you don't see on webpages but sits on our ssystem and slows it down.

Also download Comodo firewall - http://www.filehippo.com/download_comodo/

And CCleaner for clearing un-necessary files and removing redundant items from the registry - http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Careful d/l firewall if you have a wireless connection with built in firewall

I use eset smart security.

Nod32.

Best by a mile, free 30 day trial, but you will have to pay for it after that.

NOD32 = Eset Smart Security btw. www.eset.com

As far as the freebies goes I'd suggest not AVG or Avast, try AVIRIA. Check the latest comparisons here: http://www.av-comparatives.org/ for the reason why, it out performs both of them as well as beating most of the "premium" paid for AV's.

Also as others have suggested a Firewall such as Comodo is a good idea.

EDIT: If you don't mind paying for something then NOD32 or Kaspersky are the cream of the crop. Just steer well clear from the likes of Norton, it and its various spins offs are pretty rubbish.

If you have internet banking check your bank's website. Some banks give AV away free. Barclays do Kaspersky and I think Natwest do McAfee.
Also, i reccomend Malwarebytes free.
Good luck.
