Which are nice villages to live in North/West Yorkshire?

We currently live in West Yorkshire but we're wanting to move house and have a change of surroundings.
My in-laws live in the village of Alne in North Yorkshire (which is gorgeous but you need deep pockets to live there!).

Can anyone recommend some nice villages to live, either in the North or West Yorkshire area.

Just for info, our budget is 250k-280k and after a minimum 3 bed detached.

maybe search just outside thi area then. have a look on rightmove and type alne is and however far out of that area you wish to go. surprising what £ difference a few streets can make. x

Assuming you're still working where do you have to commute to and how long a commute do you want?

I'm self employed so work onsite where ever required or from home so location from work isn't really a problem. I've worked in a range of areas such as Sheffield, Halifax, Bradford, York among others.

So we're free to go anywhere nice really:)

Have done recently, noticed however you get a lot more house for your money in East Yorkshire, only trouble is there's a greater flood risk over there.

..ooh York, I love York. Really wish I could go back there, but it is expensive.

..Is there no, 'Check out Yorkshire' type sites, that you can browse locations? (Sounds odd).
I guess it depends if you want a town/city, hustle and bustle or a quiet country type area.

I'd love York as my main town centre. We're after a quiet countryside location with nearby fields for dog walks.

M1 or m62 links would be great so I can still get to Wakefield fairly quickly to visit family.
I like Pontefract Town Centre, feel Wakefield town centre has been ruined by council, I love York as a town centre.

We may end going for a mystery tour drive and see what these are like, have been to Otley town centre but was a long time ago so can't remember what it was like!

Otley's pretty awful now, bit run down, lots of chavs/fights.Nice places nearby though, have a look at:Menston/Burley in Wharfedale/Ben Rhydding/Ilkley/Addingham/Skipton or a bit further out and more villagey are Grassington/Kettlewell.All on the A65 so straight to Leeds and onto the M1. Most have a train to Leeds aswell.
Thanks for the info, going to look on right move and see what properties are in those areas.:)

Alne is OK to stop and look at but it has 'nothing' apart from that you would die of boredom.
I live in Easingwold a couple of miles away and you have best of both worlds with country life with a small market town style life. Well looked after and nice local community.
There is also a range of properties which your budget would cover.

Big up the Malton massif! Seriously, it is quite nice, moved there recently (from York) and its a pleasant place to live, decent property for the money too (compared to York anyway!). The smaller villages around Ryedale are absolutely gorgeous but pretty expensive to live in...
