I'm looking at getting a car, 2007 or newer. Looks and style wise I prefer the BMW, but I wondered if anyone had views on which is actually the best car for my money(£13,000). We do have 2 children (5+7) but I really don't like big cars, the merc is quite small inside, the BMW seems a good size, but i'm not too sure about the other 2. I have owned a Golf and BMW compact in the past so are more familiar with these.

Have had our car valued by a couple of dealerships and they are quoting £4000, so we have it listed to sell privately to hopefully make a little above that as obviously it's sale value is quite a bit higher.

So we have our car and cash, but realisticly how much do you think we should be able to negotiate off of a 2 year old car? We would prefer to buy from a main dealership.

Help/thoughts appreciated :)

If you are going to a dealership, don't expect great discounts.

The A3 is an awesome car, but if you can get a 1 Series diesel I have heard nothing but rave reviews from friends that have them.

Old A3 had really light steering, not sure if that's changed. BMW is tiny inside, have you seen the boot? Can't comment on the Merc, but pretty happy with my golf. Why the plus though? Costs more and unless you need extra space don't think its worth it. Golfs hold price well and too. Build quality not as good as it used to be and electric's can go wrong. Seat Lyon might be worth a look too, as much cheaper but still goes pretty well or even the Altea if they still make it. Anyhow that's my advice. Like hornblowracing said, main dealers are going to be expensive and also 2 year old cars are sort after, so good luck there!

Thanks, that seems to be what we are finding re: dealerships.

We were looking at the 118D, which is my favourite - but i'm also taken with the B class although am a little worried about upkeep costs of servicing etc..

Thanks for your input

Audi A3
They look nice and they're reliable
But...they don't have that much space and a real big niggle for me is that they're really common.

BMW 1series
I take it you're on about the hatchback. You'd be surprised how many issues you can get with the 1 series. I wouldn't really recommend it since it's probably the least reliable car in your list.

Merc B & Golf Plus
Neither of them really look that nice (my opinion) but they are both good cars. They're also quite spacious and practical.
I would say that one of these 2 would be best for your needs. The Audi and BMW are more for image & style rather than practicality.

I haven't gone into huge detail so people might start attacking what I'm saying lol, but I'll still stand by saying that for you the best choice would be either the Merc or the Golf

I can't contribute much I'm afraid but having been in a friend's 1 series I would say to avoid it just for the lack of space inside, I was so cramped and I'm not particularly tall!

I didn't think the BMW was too small we put our kids in and it's no problem, also the boot was reasonable we have a Mazda 3 at the moment so not alot of difference in comparison. We had a Golf before the Mazda, and felt it getting a little small with 2 chunky car seats in the back, which is why we thought the plus, although the car seats have halved as they just have boosters now.

Not really a fan of Seat, had them a few times in Spain as hire cars and they felt a bit like a ford and the interior etc.

Thanks for your advice:thumbsup:

Hmm a few of you saying how small the BMW is and I really thought the merc was smaller, I love the look of the merc, more so than the A3. It is just kids we have in the back anyway so not so much of an issue. Ok maybe a re-think, thanks guys :)

BMW 1 good but not if you are tall,
BMW Better for service done on miles not each year and each service is about same cost and set price

Hello.

Maybe not in the same 'class' but have you looked at the newer Honda Civic?

I think you could something that looks pretty good, the boot space is good and the room in the back seats is amazing. Don't really want to open up the discussion but this is my opinion. Also heard and seen that the room in the back of a Audi A3 or 1 Series isn't great - you might get away with it due to the size of your kids.

Best of luck - it's an enviable situation choosing a car.:)

Compared to the golf plus the BMW has a tiny boot, and I didn't find it very spacious inside, but I am quite tall. Fair enough about the Seat, I had an Ibiza, felt like driving a go cart, fun for a while, but not in long term. There's lots of mini mpvs around, if I was in your position, i'd probably take a look at them, but maybe you have. Hope you get it sorted anyway.

dontvw own seat as they borrow chassis and engines from vw like the altea based on golf chassis and the leon nicking the golf's engine etc

seats seem to be of a lot better quality these days than my mates mums original ibiza from 20 years ago

I love the look of 3 doors, but we will have to go for the 5 now! My parents have the civic and agreed it is a lovely sized car and sound but not what I like unfortunately. We're all out this weekend to find the perfect one as i'm too excited to wait any longer :)

Happy shopping. There are some nice cars about these days. Hopefully there are deals to be had.

Another plus for the BMW...
it falls in the £35 a year tax bracket, both the 116d and 118d do anyway.
Just bought one, fantastic drive.

I have a Golf Plus (07 plate) and i really is one of the best cars I have ever owned. Incredibly easy to drive, great visibility, really practical. Loads of good and well thought out storage. Very comfy seats, we have the 1.6 with the DSG auto box.

Lots of good independent VW service guys around. Do try and take a long test drive and you will soon get used to the slightly taller driving position.

Enjoy
