which digital tv recorder to buy - humax or wharfedale??

Hi - at the mo have got a sky + which is great to use - the only prob is that over Xmas we have just been watching the normal channels and are thinking of cancelling the subscription and getting a freeview recorder- it'll save a bit of cash in the long run!!

Have fancied the Humax 9150T but it's got mixed reviews - does anybody know of one thats's similar to sky + in usage as in easy epg, easy recording and playback - would be grateful of any help and any suggestions of good models - thanks in advance

I have a Humax and think it is brilliant, also have a Wharfdale in my study and have had no problems with it. If anything, I'd say the Humax is easier to set up and use.

My first freeview box was a Philips :) It burned out exactly one year after purchase.

I'm very happy with my 9150, it does make a little noise, but you can't hear it when the TV is on, i barely notice it at all now. Think it was under £100 in Argos, you can't go wrong at that price!!

 - it's the offer in argos thats swayed me on the 9150T- some people have said that the epg takes 10 mins to load - do u fine that?? on sky it's instant - thanks for the answers. Has anybody bought the wharfedale 320GB - thats got £52 off - seems more of a bargain but if I cant get a review I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole - thanks guys:santa:

depends if you are talking HDD recorders as the popular brand models aren't good at all. Humax and Topfield are well reknowned market leaders and for a very good reason.

I have the pvr9150t and wasnt happy at first due to the fan noise but latest update fixed that.

Superb piece of twin recording technology. i especially like the 50/50 Picture in picture facility (great for two footie matches :).

At £98 from argos, you can't go wrong.

I agree with csiman, for price/features you can't beat the the Humax 9150 at Argos atm, I bought one yesterday and I'm delighted with it.

It's a much nicer machine to use than my previous twin tuner PVR, (a DigiFusion PVR100 with updated firmware and a larger HDD) and has lots more features and a 2 year garauntee as well

The only minor niggles I have with it are no front display showing channel or time, the EPG - I actually prefer how the Digifusion displays it, but that's a personal preference and the remote - it's huge :w00t:, you could club small animals to death with it it's that big but setting up my harmony for the Humax will solve that.

The fan noise isn't an issue with me, I honestly don't think it's too noisy and my Humax hasn't got the updated firmware yet.

All in all a great machine at a very good price, cheers csiman :)

Cheers, I was going to do it via the links you provided in the Humax PVR9150 deal thread but I don't think I'll bother now I know the noise isn't bad, Ill just wait for a OTA update

The EPG does take a while to load, but i have mine set to go off at 12 and come on again at 7, so it's not an issue, even if i turn it off and on again i generally don't need to use the EPG straight away anyways!
