Which HIGH CAPACITY MP3 player should I buy?

My faithful 40GB iriver has bitten the dust. I dropped it in a plastic carrier bag, that also contained a can of coke, that split and left it submerged in a puddle of acidic goo before I realised a few minutes later! Needless to say, the coke won and the iRiver is now in MP3 heaven!

Anyway, I am now looking to replace it with another large capacity player but really unsure of which to go for.

Criteria that influence me!!!!

Must be at least 80GB and obviously must have good sound quality. I'm not interested in the slighest for MP4 capabilities.

Current candiates include CL Zen, Ipod classic and MS Zune.

Ipods are fine and now probably cheaper than the others - however, I hate iTunes with a vengence!

I see ebuyer do the 80GB Ipod for £145 and 160GB for £192. The cheapest Ive seen the Zune for in the UK is £170 for the 80GB version. Not really found anything for the Zen.

Opinions and best prices appreciated.

Go for it! ;-)

I would go for the ipod classic. I have one and it is quite thin. I also find it very easy to find a song with the click wheel.

go for a zune! (version 2 of course) there are awsome devices and you can sync from your armchair (if you have a wifi-ed house)

I appreciate that once on the device, they are very good to navigate. Its getting them their I have the issue with on iPods. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong in iTunes, but it just seems so clunky to me. On my old faithful iRiver, I was able to just drag and drop and the onboard database would do the rest. (ie sort by album, artist and track titles.)

One thing to ask on the iPod classic. I notice there is a version 5 that says it has "coverflow". I assume this is similar to the ipod touch (without it being a touch screen) Is that true?

Yeh, I have WiFi - but prefer to do everything hard wired. As you can probably gather, I'm not into "syncing". I'd prefer just to drag and drop. I know both the iPod and Zen will do this.... but will this be with full database control of the content within? ie be as user friendly without the need to sync?

Do you have one BTW? What is it that makes you think its better than the iPod? Ive always considered iPods to be neat devices, but very much overpriced. It now seems to have reversed and the iPod is now the cheaper option!!!!

Coverflow is a way of navigating through your songs, by looking at the album art. Slide the click wheel, and a row of album art slides across the screen.

I don't use it. More of a random shuffler!

Ta. It is as I thought. It is a plus!

Ive actually got something similar on my HTC Kaiser - though of course its only low capacity (being a phone!) and I dont want to use my phone as an MP3 player. (It kills battery life - and storage not big enough anyway!)

I'd personally go for a Zune from what i've seen and read.

Found a US head to head for the Zune vs iPod Classic:

Might help a bit, even if they do come out equal.

Thanks for that. I think I agree with the slight Zune advantage. Marked down mostly because it lacks Mac compatability - though I am sure that will come - but not something I am remotely bothered about. The 2 other areas the IPod won on was battery life (which is a concern) and music library in iTunes. Not remotely interested in the latter though. Hearty haw haw!!!

Need to do a little more reading I think! Particualry for battery life figures!

Interesting the much vaunted Zen isnt featuring any support! Is that because it only comes up with 30GB hard drives? (At least all I can find!) A major minus if it is!

Anyone know of any decent Zune offers around? As mentioned on a price comparison, the best Ive found is £145 (80GB) and £192 (160GB) iPod and £170 for the 80GB Zune. On a purely cost issue, the iPod is leading - which is a massive surprise!

Rep applied to all that have helped.... Ta.

Already have one. Like I said, this will be purely for music.

I say that..... but for the life of me I cant find it! Probably packed away somewhere - at least I hope so!!!! (Else I will eventually looking to replace that also.) Only really used it to take on long journeys. -and mainly used by the kids! This "toy" is for me!!! :)

HP i40 I think it was. Twas a 40GB beastie at the time 20GB iPods just appeared.
I would image the HD is still fine, but the LCD screen is knackered. If it was water, I reckoned I could have repaired it - but not Coke!

haha i've got the same one and its still motoring on! They are great pieces of kit.

Absolutely. They may not have the flashy gimmicks that the next generation have, but they do everything you need and more! (ie the direct inputs and non dependancy to rubbish software!)

Rockbox is great on it, like the FM recorder - handy for those radio sessions that need recording.

Also thinking of getting a new mp3 player, simply because i keep having to delete songs off my 4gb nano!

probably going to go for a 160gb ipod classic as it's what i'm used to, but wouldn't mind looking at a zune, just need to look more into it.

iPod classic all the way. Ipod's rock!!! :)

The newest ZEN only goes up to 32GB at the moment unfortunately, it's the best around at the moment though

I wonder why they have fallen behind? 30GB is poultry - and in solid memory territory - but with a hard drive!!!!

So it what way is it the best? Whats it got the others haven't (smaller storage aside!)

the ZEN is Solid state :) The screen and audio are of far better quality than both the iPods and the Zunes. They don't support .m4a however they do support .aac. Can also sync them through WMP or drag and drop stuff onto them. Also comes with a Microphone and Radio, cheap extras but might come in handy one day? Oh it also has a SD Card slot which supports SDHC so you can add extra space to it

T0mm should've gotten his by now, maybe he could comment? I really like mine.
