i suggest you dont go for an ipod as if you only care about looks then go for it as the ipod is ****, sound quality is poor, hardware quality average and there are far more better players they also give more accesories than a cheap shoddy case and headphones.

I am reluctant to go for an ipod being used to a simple drag and drop player, but, I don't see an option that is equal in capacity, size, etc... Would be very happy to be informed otherwise?

There are equal storage sizes for any player in the ipod range. What storage size are you after?

Oooh I like the 80Gb +

But the creative and Archos alternatives are rather larger physically, and heavier, and only the archos seem to be true drag and drop anyway.

Or am I wrong?

Dunno. I have an Archos and iRiver and both of those are definately drag and drop. It seems crazy to me that iPods need propiretry software loaded on a PC first to be able to transfer files. Fanboys might argue that they only use one PC, but these devices are mass storage - and I want mine to be exactly that.

yeh you can drag and drop files onto an iPod. It functions just like a normal portable HD

you only need iTunes to load music onto the iPod you want to play on the move.

Otherwise you can drag anything you want .doc's .gif's .mp3's .avi's...

Yes. But it is just so easy to drag music on to your player and index it there, rather than having to reply on the PC having iTunes.

Hum ho.

I agree but all my music is on my computer anyway, so iTunes is there, I don't need to drag and drop as do most other people

It's weird at first, but you get used to it! iTunes is a good player anyway (fast, reliable), it got me of using WMP which always crashed when I queued up 1000+ songs

You can use the ipod as a Hard drive removable storage device aswell, just got the music from your friend etc onto it, then when you get home, copy it off add it to itunes then it goes on your ipod.

OK ta. Is this relatively new? Maybe it was just transferring mp3s I was trying to do. It was a while back!

Cant stand iTunes personally. That in itself makes iPods a nono for me.

It's always been possible.

I know you can use realplayer (yuck) to update songs, and I am sure WMP notices it as an MP3 player whenever I've plugged mine in.

I'd imagine nearly every media player lets you update your iPod now if iTunes isn't your thing. If not there is almost certainly a 3rd party plugin that will give the function to your chosen media player!
