I'm looking for a 1TB NAS external hard drive. It has to be quick at wirelessly transferring/streaming movies/music/pictures to my familys laptop's.

I'm currently looking at this one:

A review stated that it took 5 minutes to transfer an 800MB file which seems reasonable speed.

If anyone has any recommendations please share.

Cheers.

A decent NAS on normal 100 Mbit/s ethernet would transfer roughly ~11 MB/s (>3.0GB over 5 minutes).

I'll find a link in a second and post it here.

Scroll down, that should give you a rough idea for a single drive NAS - some are really bad!

Don't forget to check out the reviews for each.

5 minutes to transfer an 800MB is terrible to be honest.

I use a Buffalo Linkstation Live with modified firmware and transfer 800MB in not much more than a minute over a 100MB network.

The hard drive will be connected to a Netgear DG34GT which is 54MBps so I don't expect it to be very fast.

Could you link me to the Buffalo hard drive please.

The maximum theoretical speed you can get from a 54MB connection would be 54/8=8MB/s however you would not get anywhere near that and would be looking at 5 max really.

This would only be wirless though, if you connect using a cable your router would have minimum 100MB/s port speeds which means you should be able to get speeds similar to me. (11-12MB/s)

This is the one I have:

However it's only 750GB

I use a Linkstation Live (v3 - black) which has a pretty decent default Linux installation, I haven't felt the need to change to a 3rd party distribution as it's got what I need already and if it doesn't I can just install it through the shell.

I like the power saving features where it goes into a standby mode and spins down the hard drive.

I was looking at this model;
http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?prodID=B145553&viewSpec=y&showold=#productTop

I suspect it's the same? just with more space and a media server with it.

From looking at the chart which abomination posted this Western Digital My Book World Edition seems to get a decent review:

It's the same model just with a 1TB drive.

I've had a Mybook and although reliable it wasn't really up to scratch when it came to speed.

They are notoriously slow due to a CPU limitation.

Watch out there's two WD MBWEs:

original (discontinued)

replacement

LS-CH1.0TL, LS-CH640L and LS-CH500L are the black v3 Linkstations with Twonky installed by default.

Ahh didn't realise there was a replacement for the WD, was the first I had which was slow.

I'm using a v2 Linkstation Live with a modified Linkstation Pro firmware which includes Twonky, BT client and it flies to be fair.

I've decided to go for the Buffalo Linkstation Live 750GB which is 88quid at Ebuyer seems the cheapest around with free delivery (morrk the supplier you listed are they any good as I saw it was 4 quid cheaper there but I've never heard of them before).

Cheers both of you for the help, much appreciated.

The "Direct" webistes are usually OK mate, but I would go for Ebuyer to be honest :)

Didn't really supply the link for supplier just the product. :)

Once you're up and running have a look about for the "stevie wonder" firmware, it's awesome.

Just did a search for the stevie wonder firmware and downloaded this "LS-DHGL_FW_220-shmod1" is it the correct version?
