Passmark score 2809 = i3 540

Passmark Score 3564 = Q8300

(higher is better)

The Quad core is about 25% better performance, but it also depends what you will be using your comp for as this performance boost from the q8300 will only be seen when you run applications that are enabled to utilise quad core.

If you are using applications that can only use 2 cores then the i3 is better, and also the i3 should run at a cooler temp

What will you be running?

Note: The append above was not there when I added mine.

On the passmark web site the "scores" are as follows:

i3 540 - Mark 2809, Rank 160

Q8300 - Mark 3564, Rank 111

The "Mark" is the power score it got (higher the better)

The "Rank" is the ranking order (1 being the best, so the lower the better)

So the Q8300 is better on both counts.

However the Core i3 is the "newer" CPU and is part of Intel's new range of CPUs - Core i3, i5, i7.

They do have advantages over "older" CPUs like better inbuilt graphics and they run cooler.

However being a new CPU Intel are keeping the prices high so you are probably paying over the odds for the CPU, as it is new.

So you need to decide if the "power" of the Quad is want you want more than the extra features of the i3.

Just noticed on the ebuyer web site the prices of the CPUs on their own

Core i3 540 - £82.09 (£86 on Novatech)

Q8300 - £106.57 (£113 on Novatech)

So buying the Q8300 barebones from Novatech is better value seeing as it is only £5 more than the i3 barebones.

Thanks everyone. PC will mostly be used by my 12 year old to play Microsoft Flight Simulator and online games. Currently looking at Scan offer of the day and Novatech PC's

If you playing games you would prob benefit with the quad

I dont play games but aren't both of those machine overkill for Flight Simulator and online games.

Particularly as you have to add the cost of a hard disk, DVD drive and Windows.

Want to future proof the machine a bit as I am sure he want more power hungry games before too long.
Thanks for all the comments and help.

Unless you are currently using multimedia or other applications that can use all 4 cores regularly I’d go with the i3. That way you have better single and dual core performance now with a better upgrade path down the line.
