what makes them better than the two i posted?

(actual question rather than unnecessary defensiveness, i'd like to know what i should be looking for...)

lol - op has two powered speaker systems yet you post a pair of speakers and no subwoofer!

btw, both the two posted are gonna be crap but ok for short youtubing etc. No good for gaming or serious music listening as underpowered and far too cheap to be any good.

i see, how much would i have to spend to make it worthwhile? i'm quite into music...

The thing is your not going to get much for that kind of money. I've got two sets of these speakers and they are good for what you pay. I've had a cheap 2.1 set up before and it was rubbish in comparison and the bass boomy with little clarity. I only use them for my computer and a set in the kitchen. I'm an audiophile and use B&W s3 602s driven by a rotel RA-02 for my main music source but even for this setup second hand you are looking at £350-£400. I've also got an AV amp with preouts and 5.1 surround through matching s3 B&Ws and an ASW 600sub. I'm not showing off, as there are better systems - my point is that I have at least a little knwledge of what i'm talking about and you pay for what you get so if you buy a 2.1 system for that kind of money its not going to be good. Spend a little more on slightly better speakers without a sub and you wont be disappointed. Even with the speakers I suggested I agree that they are ok for basic use but i'd never consider them as my main music or sound source.

LS21 aren't very loud speakers. I can talk over them when at full volume.

how about the following sets, increased my budget based on what i have been told here...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-Inspire-T3130-Speaker-System/dp/B002N46YD8/ref=sr_1_7?m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1293671097&sr=1-7

ignore the 1-2 months stock part, i think these ones are more powerful and seem to get good reviews. it's only for a laptop but i want something i won't have a secret desire to upgrade

thanks for all the help so far by the way, it's helped me avoid mistakes already

The more you spend, the better they will be and both seem to have good reviews but you're still looking at budget speakers so i'd dump the sub. If I were you and depending on how much room you have, i'd be looking on ebay for some second hand bookshelf speakers and a cheap stereo amp. Technology hasn't improved that much over the past 10years on either of these so you can get very good deals on good quality audio. You'll get more bass and more controlled bass out of some decent speakers than you will out of the ones you've suggested.

Logitech are poor, invest into some kardons, bose etc.

I'd personally go for the Creative T10's if its just for a laptop. i used to use them with my main pc, but I upgraded to 4:2 amBX last christms (crazy i know) - and at £30 you can spend the extra on an audio enhancer for your pc if you really feel the need!
#12
what did you go for in the end?
#13
haven't decided yet, been busy but i'm considering the ditching of the sub since i don't prioritise thumping bass when i listen to music; i'd prefer clarity of sound to grumpy neighbours

went for these in the end, wanted to get some before vat increases...
