Which PVR to go for?

I've just bought a Thompson from Comet but the reviews look considerably unfavourable, it was £90 but in this specific store they had a Humax reduced from £200 to £90 because the remote is missing, which is why I went for the Thompson in the end. The lady said I could take it back if I wasn't happy and having read a few reviews it seems like the Thompson has a few problems where as the Humax is much higher rated. Can anyone with knowledge of either advise please? The Thompson is a DTI 6300 - 16 and the Humax was (I think) a PVR9200T. The Humax did look pretty old through and a bit ugly.

The humax is similar to a square box but for £90 grab it it can be updated to present specs over the air this week or by computer at any time

Thanks for the reply, dam I was afraid someone might say that! anyone know where I can get a remote for it? the ones they had in Comet didn't seem like they would be compatible.

Ebay for remotes.

Humax laughs in the face of that thompson which is an eco-warriors nightmare (fan is constantly on even in standby).

£90 is overpriced for the thomson anyway but the humax is around £50-£60 cheaper than best RRP assuming its the 9200

Should be able to get a remote for £12 (see ebay 190200545182)

get down there now and swap it over!

make sure you get the full years warranty though.

Thanks csiman. Looking at the Comet website I'm pretty certain it was the 9200T. I don't see much difference in the spec between the Thompson and the Humax though, besides pip - what actually makes it so much better? sorry for all the questions.

the thomo is a much maligned beast! The current software is very stable, it lets you use TUTV and Setanta (if you wish) and has series link with is great!

Also, despite reports about it being noisy it's pretty quiet....the drive does run all the time but it's not exactly loud but would be a pain in a bedroom. i think there was an issue with the fan running all the time before that was fixed with the more recent software. And what's a few watt's on standby between friends anyway :-D

TUTV are actually now selling on ebay and have their own shop...some good buys there.

Just looking at the 9200TB specs....couple of tasty things there including file transfer via USB and watching a 3rd channel while recording 2 (from the same multiplex) but i suspect the one comet are offering might be an older model as the 9200TB is nearly 200 squid which is fair bit mroe than the thomo's 80 quid price.

google is your friend for differences. 9 out of 10 owners would prefer a humax over a thomson.

make that 9.99 out of 10 lol

Thanks for the replies everyone. Niall, they only had the one Humax model in silver or black for £200 - I think it's probably fairly new as they didn't have a better model. Anyway, just back from Comet with the Humax :D I didn't think the Noise on the Thompson was bad, but then the council are just outside the house doing roadworks, it sounded loud enough to be annoying at night though as it's in the bedroom. The Humax in comparison is much better noise wise. Plugged it in but it says "no or bad signal on the TV" :? might be a bit hard to configure until I get a remote too!

Oh, working now :D someone has just bought the remote off ebay though! :x okay who was it? :whistling:

Whats a PVR???? Am I missing anything good???:)
#10
I have a feeling it stands for personal video recorder, it's basically Sky+ but for freeview :P
#11
Oh and I've just found pressing the record button without a remote is a bad idea, since it appears you can't stop it

The remote I ordered came this morning :w00t: probably the quickest ebay delivery I've had. Though, I emailed Humax before I went to pick up the box before I ordered the one on ebay asking where I could get a remote for it from, they replied this morning saying if I email a copy of the receipt they will send a new original one out to me :w00t: :w00t: The one I got off ebay works fine but every button is the same size and colour so it's really hard to know what does what and hard to use in the dark I imagine so thats a bonus, still worth the buy to tide me over though, box is now up and running perfectly with the new firmware :)

Well done!
#24
that sounds like good customer service from Humax! Will be good to hear how you get on with the Hummy :-D
#25
quick question for you Jimmy - can you chase recordings on the Hummy (ie start watching a recording before it's finished)? I've just read a review that suggests you can't but surely that's not right??
#26
Hi niall, yes you can. I think maybe this might have been included in a firmware update so perhaps it's an old review before this feature was available?
#27
makes sense - i would have been really surprised if it couldn't! Looks like i'll start saving my pennies and maybe get a Hummy :-D

Although just been chatting to a colleague who has BT Vision and it sounds really good - bummer that i'm only 6 months into an 18 month talktalk contract!
#28
Yeah I looked at BT vision as I have BT broadband, there was a whole page on it in argos but in the end I was completely lost trying to work out what it said it was or what it actually did
#29
hehe - i know what you mean! From what i can gather it's just a smarty pants freeview PVR with the big bonus of having streaming/downloaded content all built in. Even comes with ethernet over power adapters now!

Like most new things it was a nightmare to begin with and loads of reported problems but apparently stable and pretty good now...
#30
I thought I had read a while ago it required a pretty good broadband connection to work properly, we're quite a distance from our exchange and not so long ago BT had a play around with our line resulting in us now being lucky to even sync up at 1Mb from our "up to 8Mb" package, giving us a rubbish IP profile so I'm not sure Vision would even work, shame because it's only a one off £30 payment.
#31
i'd imagine you'd need a faster line that that...does seem pretty poor even with being a fair bit from the exchange. Makes my talktalk connection look super fast :-D
#32
We used to get a 1.5Mb IP profile, or in that region which was fine for streaming video without having to wait for it to buffer, it's currently synced up at around 800Kb :? so I guess it wouldn't work. Oh well, don't have any complaints about the Hummy so far
#33
last question about the hummy....how's the EPG?
#34
No complaints from me, I know a lot of people say it takes a couple of minutes to populate when you turn the box on, I can't comment on how long it took really because it didn't cause any inconvenience. Certainly better than the sagem freeview box EPG which I had before (2 to be precise, which both broke after a few months) it's fast and easy to use so can't really say anything negative there, if I'm being pedantic I prefer the "sky epg blue" as the colour is a bit bland - dark blue and grey, but maybe thats just the graphic designer in my talking :-D

Have to say, best CS I think I've ever had, since my last post on the remote matter I have emailed a scan of the receipt and received another quick reply to say a new remote will be sent out on Monday!
#35
I have the HUMAX 9200T. Managed to get if before Xmas for £150 from Comet on sale plus discount codes- was a fantastic price at the time.

The machine has frozen a couple of times but other than that absolutely excellent- pretty much silent, very easy to set up and use etc.
#36
Oh, and I got it in silver and think it looks good

The blue Sky epg is really starting to grate on me now as it's beginning to look really dated.
#38
Oh I must just say, I retract my "ugly" statement in my first post :-D it does look much nicer than it did on the box, and the display is the same as my Sony DVD so looks really smart perched on top of that.

I agree I'm really bored with the Sky EPG, but the Hummy one colour wise looks a bit Windows 95 :?
