Hi,

I have bought a laptop for my nanna she is 72, she currently has virgin media cable broadband in her small bungalow and I need a wireless router so she can connect her laptop to the internet, it will only ever be used for one laptop, I have £30 ish to buy one, please any recommendations will be handy.

Best wishes.

Instead of buying a router try and get your internet provider to supply you one for free. Many do it if you threaten to leave, or most supply them for free anyway!

I agree with above however you did say virgin media so you probably will not get a wireless modem however you should note you need a wireless access point and not a adsl wireless router the good news is the one you need is cheaper and I dont know the price for sure but 30 should be achievable and a netgear would always be my first choice/recommendation.

We are with Virgin and they would not give us a free router so we got this and it seems good

I bought a Zoom from Amazon. Fantastic, and a great price too.

Thanks for all your replys, I will search for wireless access point.

Cheers, anymore advice would be appreciated.

NTL/virgin said they dont supply wireless routers.

Sorry, can't help - but why aren't you on the Come on Boro thread in misc.?!

Check on Ebuyer.com, there are plenty on there.
Large trustworthy retailer
You want a wireless cable router

Make sure the laptop has wireless card installed, if not you will need a card(+ariel) or a usb stick

Never mind the wifi set-up getting your 72 year old gran using a laptop is a great achievement, nice one!!!
Talk about rise of the silver surfer!
I have many older relatives (but younger than your nan) who are afraid of more simple technology like digital cameras, pvr's etc!!

Ha

My Dad is 76 and is about to move into a sheltered flat.

You should have seen the look on his face when I said they may not have private phone lines - so no internet - the whole idea was about to be scrapped. He would be lost without his laptop:giggle:

Even when he goes back home for a few days on the train the first thing that gets packed is the laptop:)

Looks like he will need to go with 3 mobile broadband now !!!
