Try drinking something like a 'Lagavulin' which is really peaty & rich, alongside something light like a 'Glen fiddich' which is lighter. There really is a huge difference.

I'd partly agree with you Op.
Some of the reviewers do talk a lot of nonsense, but a lot of the time you can actually taste a lot of the stuff they talk about - either that or it's just peeps getting sloshed and talking nonsense.

As for preference everyone has their own favourites and nobody can say one is better than the other as it's a matter of personal preference.
I'm not allowed to drink these days, but I always thought the best blend was Grants Family Reserve (ave' price £13), and the best single malt was Bowmore 17 (18 these days; good but not as good as the 17).
Prices for the Bowmore are anywhere between £50 -£120 - which puts them out of most peeps price range.
A really good alternative is the Highland Park which is on offer at only £25 in Tesco at the moment (totally different taste from the Islay malts but a super malt nonetheless).

I always found Teachers too harsh, but I agree Talisker is a bit special.

Strawberries? Battery acid is closer to the truth. As for Scottish cliffs, what do they do, lick them to build up a mental library of flavours? I'm with you OP, calling BS on this ;)
