Apart from all those self-employed and working at home, was wondering how far some people will commute to go to their work/uni ?

As the crow flies, I have a torturus 330 Metres to travel; and yes, I take the car !!

35 miles each way - up over a mountain & then down the other side, & it's too far & too steep to do it in anything but a car:lol:

I'm only five minutes away from the Job centre!

Last year I had to commute weekly to Germany :) for several months.

8 miles & I go by car.

20 mins to get there

On a good day takes just over 20 mins to get home :-D but on a bad day can be 1hr 20mins :-(

Self employed and working from home, however my daily commute to college used to cover 2 buses and a boat!!! covering about 40 odd miles, consisting of a 20 minute bus trip - half an hour boat journey - and a 35 minute bus trip - ahh the good old days!

I havent got a clue how many miles, but it takes about 45-50 mins on avarage to get to Uni. But the odd occasion when coming home during less traffic it can take as little as 35 mins.

50 minute journey for me into Brum City Centre, and it's only about 5 miles away!!!
Whatever route i take, i hit the bleeding traffic.

I work in different places; last year commuted from London (SE) to Chesterfield (Darbyshire) daily for a month - 6 hours driving a day :-(

At the moment I cycle to work and that takes a little under 40 minutes depending on the London traffic; get in, have a quick shower and boot up the PC to see what HotUKDeals has thrown up overnight :-)

Used to be a field engineer, biggest commute was 790 miles in one day for a 20 mins job.

Now it's 50 miles a day, taking roughly 1h 40mins in total to 2h 30mins on a bad day.

This thread reminds me about how lucky i was in my job.I worked at a chemical complex for 35 years and in those years i have lived in 3 different houses and each one never more than 5 mins drive.:)

simaler but used to walk then boat then bus
Or if I was staying on the main land a 10 min walk to the train station and a train journey that should have taken 20 mins but usually took 1 hour

mines 47 miles each way, from rochdale to frodsham daily.

last year I started off doing 160 each way from rochdale to peterborough before I moved there, then a few months later I did the 40 miles from peterborough to cambridge.

I like a few others on here work from home, however my job covers an area from Sheffield to the north of Scotland and Northern Ireland. My best one so far was a trip to Wick Airport, by car this would be 461 Miles each way, total 20 hours of driving, by train this was increased to 12 hours each way. I decided to fly and the MD of our company went spare as the air fare was about £460, we could have gone abroad for that. However even that resulted in a 3am start with a 1 1/2 hour drive to Leeds / Bradford, getting back at about 9pm and a 1 1/2 hour drive home, so all in a pleasant 19 hour day, oddly enough my contract of employment states 08:30 to 16:30 as my working hours per day. :)

About 3 miles for me (less than 10 minutes drive on the weekend but 1 hour on the weekdays due to other workers and kids....) oh and I pass 2 entrances to motorways and 6 schools on the way in and a lot of the route is bus lanes....

Just short of 5 mins walk down into work in the city centre. Remember when I was younger travelling 1:30 each way to get to school, no wonder I couldn't be bothered with homework by the time I got home :)

I think I've got this one won hands down. I work in China!

It's not strictly a "commute" becasue I only go there once every 4 months, but stay for 2.

If distance over time is the issue, then a friend of mine works in Cameroon and commutes there fortnightly!

86 miles round trip daily from Ingleby Barwick to Newcastle along the A19

Time taken varies depending on how early I set off. Record set over the Xmas hols going to work 41 minutes:roll: Wish every day was like that:-D

my fil works in kurdastan (or kasakstan the one in russia, I never can remember which is which) and travels there roughly every 4 weeks
#24
Kazakhstan isn't part of Russia anymore, they are (sort of) an independent country. And no, Borat doesn't work for them :)
Kurdistan isn't a country at all, this is just an area in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey and some parts in Armenia. mostly populated by Kurds.

And I thought my weekly commute to Germany would win me a prize.. How wrong was I :)
#25
I used to do a 200mile round trip 5days a week, until i wised up and bought a house closer to work! Now only 70mile round trip and that includes a border crossing each day :giggle:
#26
Not worth bothering with my 20 miles (as the crow flies) and 1hr30mins commute via SWTrains then!
