i got the dredded 3 red lights on saturday on my 6month old machine that only gets used for about 5 hours a week! the question i have is what is the process in sending it for repair, i have booked a repair on the xbox repair site and have been sent an email from the xbox repair centre saying that a 'UPS shipper has sent you an electronic UPS Returns Label' but what happens next? do UPS send a box for me to return the console or what? i dont know what will happen next. any help or advice would be appreciated and repped.

Thanks.

You have to box it up yourself, preferably in the original box and someone from UPS will just turn up at your door randomly with a label in hand to stick it on the box and take it away. If it's only 6 months old can't you take it back to the shop and get a new one, much quicker.

Our son's had to be sent back a few months ago and as far as I recall (hubby actually dealt with it) we had to find a suitable, plain, brown box, stick on the label which we were emailed, then arrange for collection with UPS. One huuuuuge thing to note, MAKE SURE YOU REMEMBER TO REMOVE THE HARD DRIVE because if the system is still the same, the one you receive back, will not be your own.

We were told specifically not to send it back in the original box.

its a pretty straight forward process, didn't take too long to receive an xbox back. if i remember correctly they send you some stickers to put on the package, I really cant remeber if they send you a box to put it in though. but yeah, dont send your original box, as you wont get it back, same goes for hard drive and making sure no disc in the tray.

after they sent you the stickers to put on the box did you have to contact them to arrange for them to collect it?

First port of call is always to take it back to your retailer - More than likely they will swap it for a brand new one on the spot. The new models also have the smaller chipset and improved cooling system. If your lucky, they may even give you a new receipt which will give you another 12 months guarantee.

If you sent back to MS, then you'll more than likely get a reconditioned - I'm on my 4th Xbox360, although current one has lasted 16+ months.

Excellent thread here regarding your warranty options.

I've sent 3 back back to microsoft, usually when your on the phone they will ask you for your email address so that they can email you a shipping label, print this off. Box only the main console itself in plain packaging, Stick the label on the box. Then give UPS a ring to confirm collection.

All the information should be in the email you receive, think the email takes up to 24hrs but you should receive it within half hour.

the most recent console I received back was the same one as I sent

xbox are so prone to faults

i had 1 - 1 red light indicating an AV Error, funny thing was it wasn't my cable as i tried two others, it was the graphics chip, how ironic that this led to an error being displayed on the screen , shocking isnt it.

Second one 3 lights of red death, i gave up on them got a 250gb ps3 now lol , so much easier, no problems at all. and to believe they tell you how to change your hdd ps3. so much better and less hassle!

A source inside microsoft revealed today that 360's were rushed in production to get out before the PS3's which lead to them not being able to full test the machines.

"The truth behind the Red Ring of Death, says the anonymous source, is that Microsoft rushed the Xbox 360 in order to beat Sony's Playstation 3 to market. This ambition led to lackluster quality assurance and not nearly enough product testing, and the result -- as many 360 gamers will tell you - was disastrous."

Sent mine off a couple of weeks back (got it back the other day).

-First call Microsoft again and get them to Email you a UPS label as the ones in the post take ages (make sure you get a reference number).
-Take off all cables and HDD, leave only the faceplate (write down all the numbers from the back of the console).
-Then find an old box preferably brown or at least wrapped in brown paper and box it up (not the original box).
-Once you have the UPS label stick it on as they ask (I put it in a clear document folder and taped that to the front).
-Once everything is boxed up with the UPS label, ring UPS using the number in the email and someone will come to pick it up.

My Xbox never appeared on my Xbox.com support page so use the Ref number you should have written down to check with Microsoft about a week after it is sent to check it's status.

Hope this helps.
