The BBC has secured rights to televise the World Cup finals in 2010 and 2014. In tandem with ITV, the BBC agreed a deal with Fifa for all 64 matches in South Africa and the 2014 finals, the venue for which is yet to be confirmed.

BBC director-general Mark Thompson said: "We're delighted to have secured the rights for one of the biggest sporting events on the planet."
The 2010 finals will be the 12th consecutive World Cup that the BBC and ITV have broadcast in tandem.
Thompson added: "Once again, the whole tournament is being made available on a free to air basis to the audience.
"We hope viewers at home will enjoy watching it as much as we will look forward to broadcasting it.

Isn't the world cup one of those untouchable events that have to air on terrestrial telly?

thats just a proposal. FIFA would just set the fee to something extortionate if the BBC was forced to pay for it.

fair enough

SO in theory FIFA could turn around to the BBC and charge £20Billion cos they know the BBC have to pay for it. Seems a bit odd and anti-competitive to say the least.
