Chemical Engineering
Yourself? How were your AS results?
#3
Well I'm thinking of doing a chemistry related course- not quite sure yet but will need to make my choices soon. Maybe even just straight chemistry.

I got 4 A's in Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Maths.

I went to Brum Uni! Chemical Engineering is right behind the School of Computer Science.

Like everyone has said make sure you have plenty of fun in your first year as you only need to pass (get 40% each module) and it doesn't count towards the final degree. Just try not to fail any modules though.

I'm off to the University of Exeter to study Biological Sciences :-D

Im techically a second year but left my last course as I was too ill to do the exam and the uni was rude and claimed I never handed in proof(despite Student Welfare AND the Student Nurse on site contacting them) plus doctors notes, letters, the head of media backing me up etc.

Basically told me I had failed the year despite doing the work as it was incomplete, and as it was incomplete I couldnt do the resits in summer(though they just sent me a letter saying why didnt I turn up!)

So changing to Hull uni instead

I'm starting my PhD in a few weeks, and while yeah it's great to get really drunk and miss lectures and scrape through with 40% and really party your way through uni, if you want to gain a useful lifetime qualification ( I got a 1st, had no problem getting sponsored for my MSc and was offered funding for 3 different PhDs) it is worth working hard, turning up to all lectures and doing your best to get above 70% in everything. If you've picked the right subject you'll become engrossed in it, you'll enjoy working hard and won't really mind putting the hours in.

Bear in mind that doesn't mind you won't be able to party too, but just don't party too hard. You still get mega holidays, and there are fab parties - enjoy fresher's week, and if you are away from home for the first time and do feel really isolated, please talk to someone about it, don't suffer in silence xx Enjoy uni!

Thanks DLM, I do really :-D I'm finishing off my MSc thesis, I'm sitting here supposedly preparing a poster for presentation at a conference next week - my first ever and I'm so nervous, I'm moving house over the next few weeks, starting my PhD on 22nd and getting married in 81 days - rushed off my feet, stressed to the max and loving every second!!!

You must be biased, cos we all know Queen's Belfast is the best :P

I dont think you are totally right there, so many students I know left uni and got far higher than 40% yet find it hard to get a job, well unless you move to somewhere like London and even then its hard. Just like someone who doesnt get a 1st doesnt mean they havent tried as hard if not harder than you.

Uni isnt simply(study as much as you can = a 1st)

I know people who get drunk a lot and come out with maybe not a 1st though some do but come out far higher than 40% and others who spend hours each day studying and scrape a pass but are more intelligent in many other ways(grades dont = intelligence)
