Phone Tiscali for free on 0800 107 9000, options 1,1.

Ask them if the offer an 8 megabytes per second broadband service. They'll say yes, ask them if they mean megabytes or rather megabits. They'll try to convince you that there's absolutely no difference, as one advisor told me, it's just the way you say it, like you can pronounce words differently.

They'll try to tell you that everything they advertise is in megabytes.

Quote them from their own web-site:

"It also important to note that Kbps is not Kilobytes per second but Kilobits per second and Mbps is not Megabytes per second but Megabits per second."

Quote them from Google:

"1 byte = 8 bits"

It just really annoyed me that they tried to convince me that their service was 8 times faster that everyone else's. One advisor agreed with me that they are offering 64 megabits per second. It turns out that everyone in the call centre quotes speeds 8 times faster than they actually are. When I point this out to them they hang up on me.

Am expecting a call back from the manager within the hour!

Yeah, you need to find something better to do!
#3
I never realised that!! I was with them for a yr... a yr of cruddy service! I'm with eclipse now. Much better

Tiscali are run by incompetent fools. Had a bad experience with them in October - the comunication between their departments is just awful ... and don't get me started on the Indian call centre they kept referring me to!
#5
Fun's over.

Manager phoned back and apoligised that no-one knows the difference there even though they're running an ISP!!!

Am getting a call from head office on Monday to confirm that they will no longer give out this mis-leading advice.

Am not bored, just really gets my goat when companies are happy to give people the wrong information and mis-lead people into thinking they're getting something 8 times faster than their competitors.
#6
i agree that the communication between departments at Tiscali is dreadful.
had some bad experiences.
#7
I'm with you there Benji.... gets my goat too!!

You should see the problems I have at my work (Tesco Petrol Station) when trying to call to the "helpdesk" to report faulty pumps etc.... It's on the other side of the world... the stuff they come out with is ridiculous! They've obviously never even seen a UK type pump before in their lives. I explain things as best as I can, and like if the pump nozzle is leaking they ask stuff like "Did someone crash into it?" Ehhhh!!! What??!

And don't get me started on Sky... have only had my Sky and Sky Plus for 3 months and already had to phone their "helpdesks" far too many times (and get charged for the "pleasure" each time to boot!).

So rant away....!!

Here's hoping they DO stop giving out that sort of information... I don't quite believe they will though! Will you be calling to check? lol

Will you be calling to check? lol

Funny you should mention that, I've given them until Wednesday to get the communication through to all the people and told them I will be checking from then onwards (which I will).

Like I pointed out to them, it's only a case of passing a message onto each member of staff when they start their next shift. ie you could attach a note to each phone so that everyone gets the message before they start their next shift on the phones.

RE: Raptorcigs-

GRRR...

And BT? Well after pressing about 15 options, you finally get through to someone from India who does the same thing!!!

Not amusing.

ironically it's on tiscali's web-site!

Not having much luck with isps today, Virgin won't transfer me as they said they wouldn't make any money out of me.

Tiscali won't transfer me as my line apparently it won't take broadband (that I've had for the last 4 years!).

O2 have been very helpful so far and I think I'm going to transfer to them BUT

Am phoning BT to find out why no-one will transfer me. BT say my line has been ceased even though I have a MAC that's valid for another week. Need to speak to another department that close at 8pm on Saturdays, so it just hangs up after telling you that!!

Now on the phone to more BT people.
#18
id rahter just master.....
#19
BT won't tell me why they've ceased my line when I've got a mac that's still valid.

o2 saying they can transfer my line, lets see.
#20
o2 say they can't transfer my line, ask to speak to a manager (who will apparently tell me the same thing), after a few minutes of arguing with the manager he agrees that he can transfer my line but it's going to take a couple of extra days.

Hate it when they tell you not to get a manager as they'll just tell you the same thing. More than often they don't!

Anyway, just called Tiscali again, first test call. STILL ADVERTISING AN 8 MEGABYTE SERVICE!!! Still haven't received my call from head office, due within the next 54 minutes.
#21
Tiscali manager not very helpful, aware that all their sales staff advise that the speed is 8MB not 8Mb. Told me to go to trading standards, told him that I was going to phone to check that they had briefed their staff and are not continuing to give out mis-leading advice. Was told that I could only phone back if I wanted to place an order, told him I'm going to phone and check on them regardless.
#22
Made 2 more test calls, still insisting that they're offering 8 megabytes/sec which is 8 times faster than other providers.
#23
When I transferred my ex-housemates NTL acount into my name, I was told that it would be free of charge and that I would get a free upgrade to 10Mb with 10Mb upload speed as well.

This was 8 months ago and has yet to materialise, and I found out later on that the woman I spoke to not only misunderstood the MB/Mb thing, but also LIED to me about the 10MB upload speed, which was the whole reason I was going with NTL. I transfer very large music files to clients everyday, but with there 'fair use' policy I have had to resort back to snail mail as its faster AND more reliable!

Good on you for bugging Tiscali, I was with them several years ago and they were completely useless then.
#24
Upload speeds are generally alot slower as the majority of stuff is downloaded so that's what they give you. Can't you upload to a web site first so your client can download it at their own pace and you could pre-upload it before so it wouldn't bother them the fact that it's slow?
#25
Head office phoning me back by end of today apparently. They said that on Monday too so I'll believe it when I see it.

Not going to let them keep on mis-leading customers like this.
#26
Well they phoned me back this morning, once again agreed that they're advertising their service as 8 times faster than it actually is. Told me that all their staff will be trained on giving out the right advice. Same thing they've told me several times so will see if it happens this time.

According to the manager they don't employ people with technical knowledge who would know the difference between a bit and a byte.

Head office still haven't phoned me tho so I've told them to get on to them again so they phone me. Can't understand how all their training material tells them to say it's megabytes. Who wrote it? Why hasn't anyone noticed?

That's pretty much a scam - good catch. I wonder what bright spark thought it would be clever.

I don't think they're intentionally trying to scam anyone, but they are telling people that it's 8 times faster than other adsl lines. I'm suprised that not one of their hundreds of staff have pointed this out before.

As the guys said, we don't employ people with technical knowledge. So the people who are selling you broadband don't have a clue what they're talking about! Not a company I'm going to go with.

Thought their advert was a bit misleading as their headline price is only the price for 3 months. It's like Sky advertising their services for free as you can get a free trial to start off.
#29
Right that's it!

Tiscali are in for some SERIOUS pain now!

Phoned again today to check that they're now legally advertising their service after several managers promising me that they would. Guess what? They're still telling people that they do an 8 megabyte service! Now I don't mind people making the odd mistake but they are blatantly trying to get extra customers to sign up by fooling them into thinking that they offer a faster service than their competitors.

So today I asked to speak to the manager after they had lied to me again, about 5 minutes later someone came along and pretended not to be able to hear me so they hung up.

Phoned back and asked to speak to the manager, told her what had happened so far and that I had been promised several times that they would correct their ways of advertising. She told me that she would speak to her staff and that she would try to speak to other managers about it. I said that she needed to make sure that all the other managers were aware, she refused to confirm that she would do it and said she was going to end the call as she needed the line. I told her that I needed to speak to her manager if she wasn't going to confirm that she was going to speak to the other managers about the problem. She refused to allow me to speak to her manager and then said she was going to hang up. She then hung up!

Can't believe that a manager would hang up on someone, totally disgraceful customer service!

Anyway, her name is Paula and I'm going to make sure that Tiscali can no longer give out this false information.

If you want to phone and give them some stick then be my guest!
#30
Unbelievable!

Just phoned again and they got it right! 8 megabits!

About the 30th person I've spoken to. Going to phone back tomorrow to speak to Paula's manager though.
#31
Didn't get time to phone today so looks like it's tomorrow.

They keep telling me it's totally unlimited too, no fair use policy apparently. I've just checked their web-site and what a suprise, they have a fair use policy!

Will add that to the list of complaints.
#32
You can add Orange broadband to this list now. Agreed to a new package for my dad for up to 8mb, received an e-mail to say they've put him on up to 1mb. Phoned to find out why they're not giving the speed they agreed to, they said it's because the line can't take more than 1mb, I know for a fact that the line takes 6mb. They've refused to give any confirmation that they'll give 8mb that they agreed to.

Through the whole of this they keep on getting megabits and megabytes mixed up and they admit they don't know the difference. Ask to speak to a manager, I'm not allowed apparently, I can speak to someone who takes the calls for a manager. Spoke to him for about half an hour where he kept telling me that he's not going to argue about the way you pronouce a word, for some reason he couldn't understand that they're different words and have different meanings, not just a different pronunciation! He also refused to confirm that I'm going to be getting the speed I was promised and will likely get a slow speed on my line.

He refused to let me speak to a manager and told me if I wanted to speak to anyone else I would have to hang up and call back, he wouldn't put me through to anyone. He kept telling me that I was asking a dumb question, I don't think it's dumb asking that I can have confirmation that I'm going to get upto 8mb and they're not going to limit me to 1mb. That was my main complaint.

After 35 minutes he told me he has going to end the call, then he hung up! Absolutely dreadful customer service.

Back to the topic of Tiscali, I gave up on my complaint when the manager told me he was going to call the police to arrest me! No word of a lie, the manager actually said that! I got a call about an hour later from Tiscali, I **** myself! It was one of the managers, he was looking at my complaint and agreed that they had been misleading their customers and he would ensure that they don't do it again, I told him that the other manager had told me he was calling the police, he couldn't believe it! Suffice to say he apoligised quickly and went away to make sure that the police weren't being called!!
