Which year was the best in video game history? Which 12 month period had the biggest releases and the most influential games? I have personally chosen 2007 from the Gamepot list due to the following releases.....

Uncharted
Assassin's Creed
The Witcher
Super Mario Galaxy
Halo 3
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
Dirt
The Orange Box
Mass Effect
Motorstorm
Rock Band
Forza Motorsport 2
Crysis
Unreal Tournament 3
Peggle
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
The Legend Of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass
Bioshock
Portal
Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

I have to agree that this year was probably the best for a long time, I'm going to put some more memorable years below.

i would have to agree. don't know what it was about the 80s but it was awash with creativity.
best for music
best for movies
best for comedies

shame all that creativity is no longer around. they don't make them like they used to do in the eighties. :(

I would say that 2007 was a great year for new IP's but many in the OP have been bettered by their sequels.
2008 was quite a good one as I recall (Fallout 3, Bioshock and others that I can't remember).

Didn't Uncharted 2 come out in 2008 alongside Assassins Creed 2 and MW2? or was that 2009?

2009.

2007 for me, PS3 was the first home console I bought with my own money and when I truly got into gaming, Motorstorm as launch day game and COD MW as I needed a new game and it was number 1 in pre order charts so I pre ordered it unaware what it actually was.

Didn't get UC until UC2 came out.

Yes I still play Speccy games , yes I am female, and yes I do indeed have funky nerd glasses :D

I love all the modern cool games with awesome graphics but nothing beats a bit of old school point and click or text based. Sorry can't put it to a specific year e.e

As IamMT pointed out quite correctly Jet Set Willy, Elite, Sabre Wulf, Knight Lore were landmark games that either created or developed the genre to which many gamers, developers and programmers aspire to surpass in quality, or playability today. Without doubt these were games that took a finite resource, restricted by processor power, memory, and other technological factors to produce a work of arts that were fun and enjoyable to play whilst stretching the imagination of the gamer. Of course 8 bit computer games are surpassed today, but many a gamer have fond memories spending countless hours playing the games on their television, going round their friends house, or visiting the Fun Fair, Pub or Sport Centre to play their favourite arcade machine.

Other games worthy of mention that were released in 1984 on the C64 (as we've already mentioned the Speccy) were Summer Games, Daley Thompson Decathlon, Impossible Mission, Pit Stop 2, Spy Vs Spy. Boulderdash, and Bruce Lee.

Lol xD thing is though, just to go OT, you are basically saying that would put most men off? But just think of all the like minded lads out there who share my passion for pre-historic games....... prefer to have a relationship with someone compatible rather than hide that I am a nerd lol :D:D

*How embarrassing when your potential gf off the world wide interwebz knows more about gaming and PC's than you do*

Happily attached for nearly 10 years anyway and he loves gaming :D

Here's a curveball:

1990

Microsoft Solitaire, Microsoft Minesweeper.

In terms of impact on mankind - these have probably 'wasted' more hours than any other (although may be overtaken by the likes of angry birds, candy crush, farm ville etc one day)

All you old farts don't know what you're talking about.

Gaming didn't start until call of duty came out.

I can remember the SNES hype, fell for it hook line and sinker.

I had a Mega Drive, 14 games Two controllers, master system converter 12 games.. traded the lot in, went to Childrens World and paid £199.99 for a SNES, got Mario with it, completed in Two days.

Bored and skint with one game.

Should have bought FF3 or Secret of mana. They'd have kept you going. Two superb games.
