Why are so many pointless deals posted?

Since I've been watching this site (nearly 4 years now I think) I've seen the site grow.

I'm really all for the effort and how eager many members are here, but I think a few too many are obsessively posting things that can barely be considered a "hot deal" if only to get a little rep, heat or attention. Sadder yet, to increase post count :S

I keep seeing supermarket deals, or something that undercuts highstreet prices by a few pennies. Wouldn't it be smart to only post when something really is a huge difference in price?

Right now, I'm waiting on something that, if it works alright, will half the price we pay for Sony duo cards for our psps, phones and cameras. That's a hot deal, not seeing a yoghurt for 7p in Asda.

Sorry to vent my frustration, but I just wanted to get my opinion out there. If you see what you think is a good price, it's not hard to do a check through google for the best price, if only to confirm. That way this site would be alot easier to navigate, backtrack to previous deals with and it would cause alot less hassle for the mods.

Hehe :P No.

I saw a "deal" regarding viva pinata some very ugly 360 pads.

I'd say that spurred it.

Ugly in your opinion - I haven't seen them but can't comment.

All the deals posted - will be helpful to someone - there are ways to remove certain topics from your view I believe.

As far as I'm concerned, assuming common sense is used, a deal's a deal. What I don't like is ploughing through a load of posts which belong in a forum of some sort, and the new deals section turning into a personal ads free-for-all.

How do you define what a good deal is though? To you half price psps, phones and cameras make a good deal, but to someone who doesn't use them, 50% off the price of loo roll might be a much more valuable deal. :)
#7
I really should work on customising the site I guess for myself, and I'm not saying only console related things are useful to myself, simply stating that unless you're saving a decent amount of money in comparison to what you'd normally pay, then it's pointless to post just for the hell of it.

On the otherhand, I'm not totally against supermarket deals. Myself and the girlfriend were happy with the cheap haagen dazs the other day! Thanks whoever posted that.

And wow. I posted quite an agressive post. And I've not once been flamed.

A true forum in the old-world sense of the word indeed.

I would like to thank all the new members because of the lack of decent deals i have saved a fortune i canno't remember the last time i bought anything from looking at the so called hot deals.Since all the old members have been banned or left, the deals have dried up because it was mainly the banned members who found all the great deals.

Got to agree, most people shop for food+household items once or twice a week. How often do people go out to buy an LCD TV or PS3? The forum will decide which deals are hot and which are cold. Last week a doughnut deal got upto 700 degrees, so people must be interested in these deals:)
#10
Who all got banned? :S and why?

The mods here seem pretty fair. Never thought anything like this would be occurring.

I don't know if you know, but at HotUKDeals we use a 'heat system'. If it's hot, its a good deal, and it's the users that decide this.
So if people want yoghurts they will get yoghurts.
Its you that sounds like the 'noob'.

I didn't once use that word, or accuse anyone of it.

Now who looks like one?
#15
Id rather have 7p yogurts then deals on game stations that warp the brain!

Whether or not a deal is good depends on what you are looking for. If you have a big family to feed and little money to do it with then every little helps and the grocery deals are great, however if you are looking for a new mobile phone you will be pleased with those deals.

You may save less with the grocery deals, but you also spend less on each item. You may save 10p on a yoghurt, or £100 on a tv, but both could be 10% of the price.
#17
Okay okay okay :)

I submit!

I admit I was wrong :P

I do see now there are Men and Women on here who just want to save on simple things too. I was a bit selfish :)

I think that more people should post more deals, I bet there are people out there who are reluctant to post a deal because they know that the repercussions could be severe from some members.

Also you are guarenteed to be initially voted cold no matter how hot the deal is.

Anybody and everybody should post what they think is a good deal, dont worry about the minority who comment on every deal.
#19
A deal is a deal in my opinion Everyone looks for different things. If you particularly dislike certain things I am sure there is a way to filter them out. I actually do like the supermarket deals - but that is my opinion.

Personally I have customised so I can view deals in time/post order...I simply flick through them all to see if anything takes my fancy.

If you are like me you will be on the site at least once a day - so it only takes a minute or so to look though. Job done :)

Very good comment Teqnophile.

I used to absolutely hate the supermarket deals, and thought they didn't really have a place here,.and shouldn't be posted. But I'm coming round... as I am grocery shopping online more and more due to a busy schedule, I can scan down the recent tesco grocery posts and see if anyone has pointed out a bargain.

And the beauty of HUKD is you don't have to look at the deals you aren't interested in - take a few mins setting up a custom page to show YOU exactly what YOU want to see.

I totally agree.. As long as it is a deal - post it! If people have nothing better to do than nit pick - particularly on new members posts it will only be counter productive in the long term.

It was only a handful that got banned, for varying reasons. We've moved on now, so have they, onto better things.

As things get bigger, the dynamics change, some accept it and make the most of it, and add their input, others hark back to "The good old days" and reguarly say that they don't know why they come here anymore. :)

You can hark on i tell you what when the end of this year is up and it has been 1 year with the so called improvements lets compare deals from this year compared to last year then let people decide. When doughnuts make 700% temperature this year but last year they would not have even made the front page.

I agree.

Personally I don't really bother customising it myself though, since it's not that often that I'm particularly looking for something, so leaving it as it is I might see a deal that's been posted that I may have never thought about getting before, and do so.

Okay, that admittedly gives the impression that you end up buying something you didn't originally know you wanted, but if I feel it's worth it, since most of the time when I buy something, it's because of it being something that I'll definitely have a use for - plus I'm even more of a cheapskate these days anyway that I put a lot of thought into things before parting with my cash.

Quite agree- I am relatively new to this site & I find it very helpful- both on small grocery deals, electrical items, and general day-to-day items.

I have just reserved a travel cot at Argos for £35 that I saw on a current post. I nearly ordered it last night elsewhere for £55.- now I would not have found that had it not been on here. The point being that the chances are there are very few members of this site currently looking for a travel cot but because someone bit the bullet & posted it, I have pocketed £20 & a few brownie points with 'er indoors.

However, I have been put off posting what I consider to be deals for the reasons outlined above- comments/getting voted cold/nit-picking etc and this is a shame because they could have been great deals for another member who may have just been looking for the item I have found- just like me with the travel cot.

Maybe I should bite the bullet then?

If you have an accurate way of comparing year by year, then I would be interested.

The "people" will not have to decide, as it would be there in black & white.

Abacus, we're a community forum. The members make it what they wish. Don't you realise the amount of people that have voted on this to make it 700? We're not the same site we were a year ago. We attracted a lot of people who came here from MSE who made the site different - it's the members that make up the community!

Yes i do agree you are not the same site you were a year ago and also a lot have gone back to mse.

The problem that i have is that you are only meant to vote hot. If anyone ever votes cold on a deal they are most likely found killed the next day.

Its just annoying when you get 'OMG WHO VOTED COLD' and 'i wish negative voters would explain themselves' when you never get 'OMG WHO VOTED HOT' and 'can positive voters please explain thereselves'.

Matt, it is only good forum etiquette to explain cold votes.

they why not make people explain hot votes as well then?

There's an obvious reason why people want to know why it was voted cold. If it is not a good deal, it implies there is a better deal for that item out there, so as this is a site designed to save money, it makes sense that people want to know where it's cheaper. If people know of a better deal, or of a reason why it's not a good deal, it's kind of selfish/rude not to say don't you think?

Hot votes don't need the same explanation. The deal is already there for all to see, so if someone votes it hot, it means that they agree with the OP.

This is part of the reason for my why there are so many poo deals. people are scared to vote cold as they get their voting powers reduced and so on. Eventually no one will vote cold so every single deal ever will reach the front page

It means that the voter does not regard the deal as a hot deal.
