Dispute with Universal Pictures

In late November 2009, LoveFilm stopped adding new DVDs from the distributor Universal Pictures UK to the rental sector of their site. This made some fairly big 2009 films unavailable to users including Michael Mann's Public Enemies (2009 film), Brüno and Funny People.
The UK DVD rental news and reviews site ChooseDVDrental speculated that the dispute was a result of Universal Pictures holding out for more money for rental discs, comparing the stand-off to that between Universal Pictures in the US and Redbox DVD rental.[11] As of February 2010 the dispute between the two shows no sign of resolution.

That'll be why they don't have inglorious basterds then.
My dad was looking for it the other day.

Jokes on both of them.

"Oh, I can't get this film to rent. Never mind, I'll just download it, but you can't say I didn't try."

Or go out and buy the damn thing! If they wanted to source films illegally surely they wouldn't be paying out for a rental service?

I'm a member of Lovefilm and because Inglorious Basterds wasn't available I downloaded it instead.

See I don't have any problem with buying a GOOD film, nor rental services (if and when I have time) but I have had so many problems with discs not working, not arriving, not arriving back at depot, or being damaged when they are returned I gave up years ago.

I joined blockbuster, because of the dispute with universal,l their rental service has been excellant so far, much better than lovefilm. As I am always getting my top listed dvds.

I should cancel really but I hate the fact you have to call them to do it. An annoying ploy to deter you from cancelling that is, annoyingly, working!

Do it at 11pm at night then as then you can cancel online.

You don't have to call them to cancel, you can do it online.

I hate the model of online rental they have spread everywhere. Amazon had the right idea, but sold out to them.
Also this no late fees rubbish. If you don't send your dvd back in time you lose any credit left for that month.

I am trying cinema paradiso at the moment as at least they promise to send the dvd's in the order you list them (first one available) as opposed to Lovefilms "wish list" or whatever they call it now.

You give them a wish list and they send you what they like from it with only three different levels of pref. It takes any control from you on managing your viewing.
When I was on Amazon I had a list from 1 to.... At the side it gave you information on availability. short wait/long wait/available.
When I sent back a dvd I could alter my list and would know what dvd I would get next as they always sent the highest (nearest to 1) choice that was available.
On top of this I could stick one I really wanted but had a short wait at the top and if I was lucky it could come in before my next dvd was sent so I got this instead.

Just delete everything from the list if there's something you really want.

I've never really had a problem with them.

Tried a list of 1. Would not have it.
I used to alternate adult films with family children films very easily with Amazon. No chance with this system. It's a backward step.
However from how they have taken over the market it seems I am in a minority among legal viewers because I want to manage my own watching schedule.
If I was that way inclined I would copy the dvds and watch when I wanted.
