Why do they always bottle it?. And what do you think the chances are of ENGLAND beating GERMANY, BRAZIL or PORTUGAL in a shootout this time around ??

it isn't a lottery it is skill

We don't.

I think we beat Spain in 1996 on penalties.

We make too much of it.

Personally I think its down to the English players mentality and frame of mind. Too many of the players are thinking negatively before they even hit the penalty. They are probably thinking in the back of their minds that if they miss they will be a scapegoat for the nation and will be ripped to shreds by the press when they get home.

In a penalty shoot out you can't afford to doubt yourself, because once self doubt creeps in you will more than likely miss.

But with Capello in charge, I think he is the right man to get the players 100% prepared mentally.

Any player who thinks they are worth in the region of 100K per week should be able to skelp a penalty in the top right/left hand corner, taking the keeper out of the equation. More down to skill and bottle rather than a lottery.

I myself think that England lack confidence and self belief thats why the pressure always gets to them during the big games..

Why do ENGLAND always lose at penalties? Because the other team is better than England.

They don't practice them do they? Was it Sven who said there's no point practicing as there's no way to recreate the pressure of taking a penalty in a big game? I'd imagine there would be even more pressure on you if you've not been practicing all week.

Hopefully, they'll get well and truly humped. That way the whole team can take their equal share of blame.
