bit pointless, but had a guy round to do some work today, when I asked him for a drink, he wanted hot tea!! Its like 22 degrees here today, why not a cold coke or something.

he said its the best thing in hot weather.

I have to say only diet coke iwth lots of ice does it for me in hot weather. Shame its freezing here today, still on the diet coke tho!

When you drink cold drinks it makes your body shiver (without you knowing) and raises the body temperature, when you drink a hot drink it lowers your body temperature. (or so scientists said before)

nothing beats a nice cold glass of cider. Strong bow from the pump.. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I agree!!!

I always thought it was because drinking a hot drink raises your core body temperature ever so slightly, the body counteracts this by bringing blood vessels closer to the surface in order to coll you down. The opposite goes for cold drinks, so in fact they make blood vessels shrink further away from the skin surface to raise core body temp...

BUT I would rather have an ice cold pint of cider!

isn't along the same lines as the Canadian trick of eating Ice Cream in Winter to lower the body temperature and make you more accustomed to the weather?

And yes I did get that off Ben & Jerry's Minter Wonderland!

i dont drink at all but i will admit, cider is nice. But coke does the job lol!

Ive always said exactly the same!! In boiling hot weather people want a cup of tea, doesn't make sense to me. ide much rather chug down a cold glass of juice

i think that the back of the throat is close to the hypothalamus, which is responsible for regulating the body's temperature (among other things), and by drinking tea the hypothalamus detects heat and uses negative feedback (not bad rep) to cool the body down.

although, i don't think that the effects are great enough to actually make you feel cooler. it doesn't when i drink tea on a hot day anyway, and that's a real life experiment, lol.
#22
Sounds weird but you can have tea in any weather.

the throat isnt near the hypothalamus as the hypothalamus is in the brain lol
unless u meant the receptor for the throat is near the hypothalmus in the brain?
anyway i prefer cold drinks in the hot as im not really a lover of hot drinks anyway
all the old women in my office love their cups of tea and having heaters on when i want the air con on! :?

hmm, i was thinking that perhaps the heat would have a direct effect on the hypothalamus as it is on the underside of the brain, but thinking about it that's preobably wrong. although, the hypothalamus would eventually become aware of the raised body temperature, and then put in stronger measures to reduce body temperature (dialating blood vessels, sweating etc)

My dad used to say this to me when I was little - not the best thing to day to a ten year old who's red in the face, gasping for a drink because she has been playing out in the hottest summer on record.

A cup of tea is THE best drink in the world, hot weather, cold weather, any weather!

The best one is first thing in the morning......a lovely cup of morning medicine,a steamy golden brew makes the world a better place to be.It picks you up when you feel down,it calms you when feeling stressed........if world leaders sat down together and had a cup of tea before they made any decisions there would be a lot less strife imo.

Big up the brew!!:-D

Ah, I know this one. It's not about the brain directly but morris7 is on the right lines. It's about your internal organs. A cold drink will lower the core temperature of internal organs, shocking the body into warming your body's core and hence increasing your overall temperature at the same time. A warm drink will do the opposite, encouraging your body to reduce temperature. So on a warm day you can cool down with a hot cup of tea

I'm one of these people (possibly only person) who virtually doesn't drink hot drinks at all. I just don't find em refreshing at all... My current fav drink for it's refreshingness is "Ace" juce from Lidl. Can't beat it!

haha strongbow isn't actually my favourite but i was trying to quote the adver "comple first pint refreshment" when he drinks it and goes ahhhhhhhhhhh for ages.

I'm quite fond of the kopperberg stuff, their pear cider is really nice on a sunny day

What would you class as real cider then??

Scrumpy jack?:p
