A lot of people complain that the search on HUKD isn't very good but i constantly notice that posts are made without tags being added. These tags are what make the search results as accurate as possible and without them, it's practically impossible to sift through lots of results looking for exactly what you want.

Why do you think people don't add them? Are you one of those people? If so, shed some light on this please. ;)

#2

 guilty... as charged...... I didnt know about them .. sorry :-(

Yeah, it's gets annoying when you can't search for a thread because of no or not good enough tags. Anyway, you can add tags yourself if the OP doesn't have them, like I do sometimes.
#5
me too, how do you add tags, and what are they for

When ever you create a thread, there's a title box, a content box and at the bottom, a tags box. To add tags, in this box you write any keywords that people might use when searching for a post like yours. You separate those words with commas. For example, for this post i put my tags as:

hukd, search, results, meta, tags

That's how you have to write it in to the tags box.

so when you search using the search function it finds the tags too?
#8
I just added a tag to this thread so you know anyone else can tags to another post.
#9
what is meta?

Yes, search engines or search features of websites rely on tags more than the title to find posts or websites.

meta is from the term "meta tag" which is the full name for a tag that you write for search engines to find.

so if i now search hukd, then this thread will come up:?

surely with the plus and mnus method then the tags are irrelevant, or the plus and minus is irrevlevant
#13
The tags do not work as they should. It would be good if you could search for a particular tag.

As it is, you have to add it to a random thread or relevant one, and then click it and then remember to remove it from the thread you have tagged if it is not relevant.

I'm afraid I don't understand a word of this, I have only had a computer for little over a year and knew nothing about them beforehand.
Perhaps I am not the only one who finds this very difficult?

I don't think the search engine on this site searches the tags

There's no purpose of having tags if that's the case. As far as i'm aware ALL search engines or search features of websites use meta tags to get results if they exist.
#17
But I don't know of many forums that would actually need the poster to add tags into their post in order for its search engine to pick up the thread.

I've just added this tag 'test 1387' (without the space). If you search for it, it doesnt find the post.

Sometimes search engines/features need to "index" tags before they'll be picked up in search results. You might find that after a little while (whether that's 10 minutes or 48 hours) that typing that in to a search will show it up in the results. I may be wrong obviously, but that is generally the way online searches work. Sites/posts get indexed and then show up better results due to content as well as meta tags.

Note: I say "10 minutes or 48 hours" but every site is different. Also, adding these tags on HUKD will also enable search engines like Google to find specific posts better. For example, someone who has never been on HUKD might be searching for the cheapest price for GTA4 and they'll find a post about it on HUKD as a search result in Google because the tags "gta, IV, 4, cheapest" were added so tags don't just aid HUKD results, all search engines will benefit from them.

And you know what that means don't you? We'll get to 200,000 members even quicker and this time we'll be given £5.00 Amazon Vouchers!!!!!!! ;)

This is a post I made almost three months ago. It has a tag on it called 'bub*ble pop*ping good*ness' (without the asterisks). If you try searching for it, it doesn't show up.

This is a post Admin made about Tags when they first came out and their purpose.

type bubble popping goodness in to google and look at the 12th search result or thereabouts.

A fine example of how tags are important for people who are not yet on HUKD but are looking something that we have tagged.

oh so were not on about the tags helping us hukd members find things easier, the tags are there to get more members

That's google, not this site's search engine. :)

BTW, I totally agree with you, and have suggested before that there should be some system of standardised tags, so there is some consistency in their usage, to make them a more valuable tool.

Both really. I may have been mistaken about this being the reason the HUKD search feature is quite bad but the my point still stand. adding tags lets people find the threads better, especially from google. Here's an idea. If you ever need to find a thread on HUKD, just go to google, type your search words in there and add "hotukdeals" as a word at the end, that should work best
#25
I don't do them as i didn't realise the search uses them I asumed it searched the titles and content of post not tags

i think if anything the tags probably add to much to an already caked up search engine, if people start adding all sorts of tags to their threads then surely when we search its gonna be even more cake to wade through, i put in +hukd into the search on here, and this appeared, now i though +hukd would on search for titles with hukd in

oh gives up more confused now then when i first read this thread - lol

tags do not have any use on this site according to the mods. The box should be deleted when submitting a new thread.

A search for test1387 does not find this thread.

wow shh I dont know why the admin even added a tag option the forum search option should work without any tagging of any sort I just use them as a joke

no one should need to tag their threads to make them any more searchable

Could you post a link to where the mods said this?

Have you read Admin's post that I and nightswimmer have provided a link for?

Also, emma provided some info on tags:
Tags - what are they for?

Tags are entered against a deal, as single words or multiple words. Tags allow deals to be linked. For example, if a Dell PC is listed, tags entered could be Dell, PC or Computer, for example. Clicking on the tag “Computer” would bring up all other deals with the tag Computer.
Tags are entered when a deal is originally posted, but anybody can add additional tags to an existing post. On a deal listing, at the end of the tags list, just click “add a tag” to add your own to that deal.

If you want to display all products that have a certain tag associated with them, enter the tag into the URL. For example, http://www.hotukdeals.com/?tag=TFT will search for all deals with the word 'TFT' as a tag. Just enter /?tag= to the end of www.hotukdeals.com

For a complete guide on Tags, please see this post by Admin.

The part I have highlighted in red is the part that no longer works, as I said earlier. :)
