Why does looking down seem further than when you are looking up?

Not overly scared of heights, though I think a little respect for heights is natural right? just been getting some decayed leaves out of the gutter, seems so far down when I'm up the ladder but when on the ground and looking up it's almost as if I could do it if I tip toed.

Why is this? google didn't answer my question.

When your at the top of the ladder the distance from eyes to the floor is more than that of when your standing on the floor looking at the gutter

Just thinking about it a bit more, so if I did it upside down my brain wouldn't be so scared?

Remember that you have built in senses (in your inner ear i believe) that determine height and balance and such. Being upside would probably be just as uncomfortable, depending on the height.

Not really lol, I was doing gutters a few days ago and I also had to pull Ivy down from the roof too, i'm scared of heights myself but I looked up and though that's not a problem, (i'm 6"1 and the gutter was just out of my reach so I thought it's not too bad) anyway I got onto the roof and it's only when I looked down and realized how high it was I asked myself the same question!

We have 12" plus plants growing in ours ! & we are all too scared to go up the ladder !

So does that mean then cos I'm only a little fella , I wouldnt be as scared as you whos 6 foot 1 .... as when i stood up on the roof I dont make that much more height ...

see the counter to that is ... it may take 5-6 of my body lengths to make up to a roof where it may only take 3 for you ....so I'm falling 5 x my height where as you are only falling 3 x

Im confusing myself now
