it is a nightmare when you are making sure not to double post anything.

agree its naff!

Tell me about it - can never find a thing!!

It's not naff, you just need to use it properly. :) Always use Advanced Search - it takes 30 seconds (if that) to do a proper search, far less time than posting a deal which then gets removed for being a duplicate. You can search on thread titles or inside the thread. You can search just in Deals forum. You can search on date. It's very easy to customise.

Always put a plus sign in front of each word too!

Agreed. I used to really slate the search on this site and agree it is useless. The advanced search however does work well and also now brings back results in date order.

I don't like the + prefix either and it isnt commonplace elsewhere.

Lots of them do it - Google does it. It tells the search that a word MUST be included in the results. You could put a minus sign in to exclude a word as well. One of the classic examples for that is if you want to search for "python" to read about snakes, but don't want a load of Monty Python sites - so you'd search

+python +snake -monty

:)

Oh and there's the other tip of using quotation marks to search for a phrase. So if you wanted a Chad Valley product, searching for "Chad Valley" would only bring up results with those words together, and not with just the word Chad or Valley on its own.

Here's an example of the difference Advanced Search can make. Using whizzkid's thread about the Shrek Donkey toy - say you come back on tomorrow and want to see that thread again but can't find it.

This is what you get if you just type shrek donkey into the search box on the main page.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/search?action=search&keywords=shrek+donkey&pagenumber=10&page=1

The one you want is there, quite near the top - but there are also 25 pages of other results.

This is what you get if you go to Advanced Search, type in +shrek +donkey and then click on 'Deals' under 'Search In Forums'.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/search?keywords=%2Bshrek+%2Bdonkey&search_type=title_only&merchant_id=&merchant_search=&user_id=&user_search=&user_search_type=posts&threads_with=minimum&threads_with_number=&posts_from=6months&posts_from_option=newer&sort_results_by=Last+Posting+Date&sort_results_option=DESC&temp_min=&temp_max=&forums[]=1&advanced_search=Search+Now

One result. And the one you want! So for two extra plus signs and one mouse click on 'Deals' - that's a big difference.

The advanced search doesn't work either. I was looking for the latest NOTW/Tesco thread.
In the advanced search I typed in News+Of+The+World+Tesco, chose deals and vouchers and then selected groceries.
Not on the first two pages...

Not on the first two pages...

1. you have to have a space between search terms

2. search terms have to be at least 3 characters

3. Include expired.

I tried +news +tesco in adv search and DEALS and it found all 3 recent ones.

The search function on this site IS pretty rubbish.
It's usable once you know how to use it, but is absolutley awful if you don't. Surely if it were made more user friendly we wouldn't have nearly so many duplicate posts on here.

I actually think they should get rid of the SEARCH box completely so it forces everyone to use the advanced search. The basic search is right up there as the worst on the internet IMHO and just causes confusion and lots of duplicate deals and "where is the thread on ......" etc.

I agree that the general search box at the top of the page is nigh on useless, so it doesn't surprise me we get so many duplicates. However, I don't think you can solely blame the search, because there are still a lot of people who don't bother to even use that one before posting.

It would take 5 minutes to work out how to use the Advanced Search effectively, really - much better that people do that than spend a lot more time posting deals which then have to be removed. Would also cut down on frustration levels I reckon! :-D

Actually the + seems to achieve nothing on google from my experience

tried +python +snake -monty and found 269,000 results with all the top ones having both python and snake in them.

tried python snake -monty and found 266,000 results with all the top ones having both python and snake in them.

If as you say the + sign makes it MUST include the term then I would expect more results on search 2 above

I think this is why nobody uses the + sign on this site.
