Why Is This?

The JFK Avatar

My ring finger has started to swell up for no reason. I haven't banged it or hurt it any way. I fractured it about 5 years ago but I haven't had any problems since. It has also gone really firm and hard. It is also double the width as my ring finger on my other hand

Does anyone know why this is?

P.S this is a serious thread. No hating. No trolling.

Surely can't be?
#5
The weather can affect it but normally heat!
Too much walking perhaps?
#7
Do you wear a ring on the finger?
Perhaps that is causing it to swell?
How big is your ring:whistling:

Maybe. It does feel quite hot. It feels like it's going to explode.

But why are all of my other fingers fine?
#12
Have you stuck it in something hot, like a pie for instance?
#13
Have you gone from the cold to the hot or vice versa?

My fingers seem to swell when I do that..

I would get it checked out if I were you, if only to be sure. As someone else suggested the NHS direct helpline is very good, give em a bell, they'll give you some suggestions as to what it might be and then suggest what you should do. Try and pop some ice/frozen peas on it n bring down the swelling.

If it's still like this tomorrow I may give them a call.

It seems to be directly related to the amount of tripe you post on here.

I'd recommend refraining from typing for ........ooh, a few decades.

You'll find the pain will soon dissipate
#28
Maybe the surgeon lost your finger and replaced it with another certain part of your anatomy...that would explain the unusual thickness...and the stiffness could be put down to how excited you get when you're posting on here :w00t:

heya I work as an orhtopaedic theatre nurse, and it's possible the fracture did other damage to your finger. we regularly operate on things that have happened as a result of an old injury - such as a fracture. it could be a cyst caused by the old fracture among other things. it definately needs checked out and make sure you mention the old injury.

these things can happen many years after the initial injury

Thanks for the info.

I will see how it is in a few days and if it's still bad I'll go to the doctors.

He obviously isn't self aware.

Jean Luc Picard argued that only mindless automatons=lack of self awareness.

Judgement it seems!

yeah it could be to do with the old fracture. spontaneous swelling's not a good sign.

make sure you check your capillary reflexes in that finger. pinch the top of the nail and you'll see it goes white. it should take no more than 2 -3 seconds to change back to pink. if it takes longer it could be a sign of interruption of blood flow to the tip of your finger due to the swelling, if so seek help asap.

I sometimes get that when watching late night Hollyoaks.

Should I be calling NHS24?

It goes back to pink straight away.

Hopefully it's just a one of thing, maybe something to do with the weather?

I'm off to bed now, thanks for all the advice.

I wouldn't think the weather would affect one finger and not the others...
