I'm bored.

Is today seeming to go slow for anyone else?

give me something to think about, or something good lo laugh at - also who decided on the length of time that should be in 1 second?

edit - glow = slow

Ha-ha, statements like that usually start arguments rather than end them...

Quote on yesterday's calendar tear off page:

"Time is to stop everything happening at once."
#13
1 second is the amount of time that a quartz crystal osciallates at isn't it? Maybe that's why there's that much time in a second?

who decided on the length of time that should be in 1 second?

a second is measured by (and i quote)

"the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium 133 atom."

see here for a full explanation

lol God ftw
if you dont believe in him then i guess Mr Watch created time
#16
thanks....... why caesium though?
#17
trying to remember back to a-level physics and chemistry........

i think it has something to do with it's ability to decay at a constant velocity, whereas other elements decayed at a velocity that could be affected by other external influences.

don't really know though!!!

well it was not always defined as that but to try and pin it down more accurately they need to bass definitions on something which is absolute. they probably found that that many oscillations of that particular atom took one second.

i dont know if that explains it well though ^^^

Think about me in a basque............time will not go slow.......it will stop. The fear will clear your mind of everything. :-D

isnt that the same with quartz though, hence the reason they used to use actual qurtz in watches...... or was i bullsh***ed as a kid watching "where on earth is carmen sandiego"

:w00t:Thats not what you told me:whistling:
#25
yeah it was the same with quartz. they manufacture it so that it resonates at a certain frequency which is (and i mean really really really..............and so on) close to what a second is.

the caesium second was made to be exactly the same as an ephemeris second which was based on calculations (more about that here)

This is about atomic time and how that was standardised
#26
More importantly who decided that there should be 24 hours in a day and 60 minutes in an hour? Why not 100 minutes and 100 hours a day and have a different length of a sedcond?

Or even more importantly, is it possible to travel through time? I think they proved that you can change the time at which rate affects an object by travelling at different speeds etc but can you actually slow time down so I could live longer?
#29
you'd have to go really really fast
#30
technically you can already see into the past.

Really annoys me when people see lightning then count a second per mile until they hear the thunder.

It's 5 seconds per mile!!!

Isnt Caesium a posh name for a pepper ?

If they are really hot it can make time drag when you are on the loo.
