When you look at the competition, its clear why we pay.
#2
It's not. £39 is too much. Always look for an offer, can usually get it for high £20's or early £30's.
#3
it helps a little in keeping out the kids not much but a little

40 pound by few billion online users, we get 3 Lynx server based in india, with a guy watching the LEDs if working.
Don't think all the money going into maintance - remember COD4 downtime took 3 months to correct, ~MS fault.
But you need to get it for online,
when PS3 gets more games will become BEST as they don't have any charges.

Well, i'm a new XBox 360 Player...haven't really had time for consoles the last few years. Went round to a mates and played Call of Duty 3 online and totally loved it. Managed to get an xbox 360 off here the day after from DelBoySmiffy (for a bargain price), went out and bought COD4 and used my one month live free trial. The online play is so good that I wouldn't hesitate to spend £30 on it, and i'm a tight Aberdonian!!

Not clear to me.

Give me some examples why it is worth it.

I think you are enjoying the fact that you are playing online. So just too play online it is worth £39? I know you have to pay if you want to play but surely that doesnt make it worth it?

I play COD4 online every night on my PS3 with friends - and it is free.

Computer games server - FREE
Playstation servers - FREE
Microsoft servers - CHARGE.

But well worth the experance, also get 1 month free, if your have 2 or more hotmail accounts, can sign up for 1 month free with each hotmail address, but will have to change gamer tag and resend out friends requests, but free just sign on 2nd account for 2nd month free.

COD3 and COD 4 cool games

Best thing about live is that you see your friends online even if on different games and can send message and voice chat.
On PS3 you have to have the same game loaded, otherwise you won't see your USA friend online. (so I been told)
#10
The fact that PSN is free is irrelevant. The fact is £30 (or less) is a small amount to pay for an excellent service.

Thanks for giving examples. So basically, to see what your friends are playing online and message them during a game is worth £39.

In game XMB will be with the next update.

How is it irrelavent that PSN is free?

Just saying Live is excellent, best, etc does not educate me on how it is worth it.

Slight exaggeration :whistling:

Xbox live had problems from Christmas eve to the 2nd week in January - 3 weeks. COD4 was the game that suffered the most.

During the 3 weeks it was flakey, for me, only confirmed that Xbox Live is essential to get the most enjoyment out your games.

Its also a social thing as well - Will be COD4 later tonight playing till early hours, downing a few beers and chattin away with my real/virtual friends. :friends:

If you have a PS3 then of course your going to play on PSN - If you've got an Xbox360 then if you haven't got Xbox Live, your not getting the most out of your games. Some games are heavily bias towards online play (Halo 3 / COD4). In single player mode, they're good, but can be completed in 5-6hrs. Online, COD4, I've clocked up 4+ days of play (Sad ain't it).

Also - Don't know many who pay full subs for live. You can get 12 months for £28-ish or less if you drop on a Starter kit. I picked on up for £10 last year.

I'm just trying to say that it is a small price to pay. If XBL cost £5 a year, you could still argue that PSN is free, and therefore better (or whatever you want to conclude from that). Now obviously that is an extreme example, but in my opinion £30 isn't much to pay. Obviously not everyone will share this opinion, and many will begrudge paying the subscription. Quite frankly, I wouldn't consider an Xbox 360 to be a worthwhile purchase without also getting XBL.

I'm not familiar with PSN, so I couldn't give specific examples relating to that as to why XBL is worth the subscription. I can however say that the friends management and messaging is well implemented, and as much as I resent achivements, it is very convenient to compare them with your friends. Private chat is also a very useful feature, purely for the fact that you can be in game while you're using it.
#14
the PSN network is free because its sh**e.

You cant send your friend a message without leaving the game your playing

Many online ps3 games dont support chat (defines the purpose of playing online for me anyway)

you cant invite friends to games

You cant go on private chat while playing a game

I pay around £28 for my xbox live, I dont mind paying it, never before could I play co-op campgains with my friends or online in other games.

im a big fan of Live! I used the free wifi on the ds no compaints there worked well. I have not used PS3's live but i dont mind paying for live! I only paid 24 when bizits were working. You must admit its an almost perfect play every time!

.. its good in the fact that world of warcraft that has 10 million players - population of New York costs 8 quid a month....

The fact is, that Sony isn't offering a service at all. Each game has to run it's own servers, keep its own friends list, you can't chat between games, you can't even message friends outside the current game.

PS3 game developers currently bear the cost of online play and so it is ultimately possible that they could either not include online play or pass the cost on to the consumer, via the price of the game.

Whereas MS are actually providing the servers for the game developers.

Sorry, you pay for a service that is worth every penny with Live. The Sony Network is free because they don't actually have a network.

Okay, show me the evidence that SONY ARE PROVIDING A NETWORK. They are not...it is the game developer that provide a network(server) for each individual game. Not one unified network like Live that ALL games use!

i dont think your listening. I dont know how many more ways to say it.

When a developer creates a game for the PS3...there is no way for that game to go on line because SONY DO NOT PROVIDE the network for it. The games developer provide the servers.

I dont know how many more ways i can say it.

Google it if your confused

In my mind they should either: charge for online play but make all marketplace items free OR free to play but pay for marketplace items.
£39 is just about o.k but charging for items in the marketplace isn't.

So you agree that they do have a network but it is not unified?

BTW I do know what Google is, please stop trying to patronise me.

I never disagreed that there was a network, its just that the network isn't provided by Sony i.e. Sony dont provide the servers to host online gaming, the developers do. This is where it differs from Live, where MS have central servers that ALL games go through.

Sony not providing expensive servers = PSN for free
#30
The fact is the 40 quid a year works out about 10p aday, wow!

Sony has a long way to go before they catch up with the features of XBL, Microsoft have more money than God and can shove as much as they want at the Xbox and they do.

Sony are being crippled by International sales of the PS3 and at its high consoles price the least they can do it provide some on-line activity but it is a pitiful and sparse experience. Sadly Sony just don't have the experience they deal with a largely single player base of title games in comparision to XBL.

Also Sony only provide a net framework but certainly don't provide servers for games which also means that when the revenue from those games dries up so do the servers, COD4 in a year on PSN and no revenue to support it, you do the math!

Whats £39 a year ?, most people spend that on a night out in town, or on a piece of clothing
Anyway i think its fun, i can message my friends, get game addons (some free).
It blocks out some annoying kids from playing online ,not all but some

Cool so you get msn and the odd game add on.
Welcome to PC gaming, msn + xfire, hundreds of free mods for most games. And its free. Oh and you don't have to try a FPS with a sucky joypad.

Xbox 360 is so simple compared to pc gaming, most of my friends know jack about computers, so if i wanted to play them online, it would never happen.

With the xbox all they need to do it swith it on, and they already online!

Indeed but i like the joypad, some of my friends dont have a PC/laptop.
Plus with PC gaming you have to upgrade ever so often, I used to be a pc gamer, until my Gfx card fan burnt off

With a console you just put the disc in and it plays, theres no checking that your pc is compatible, updating drivers, making harddrive space, messing about with the settings, having to mess about installing and uninstalling.

Also there is hackers/cheaters on the PC
