If thats the case it means your computer can not find the tracks on your pc are you sure u have copied all the tracks on to your pc and dragged them to itunes and NOT from the external hard drive?

No you don't your itunes library can be on an external drive as long as you tell itunes thats where it is.

In your itunes options/settings you have to tell it where your itunes library is i.e the drive and folder of your hard drive where your music is stored

If you want itunes to read off you external Hd then you need to go to Options and then there should be something called library location. On mine ive got my Hd to be drive :E so i declare it as drive ":E\DannyMsituneslibrary"

If thats no help then just play around for a bit till you find library settings, either that or take up hard drive space by copying all music to "C:MyMusic\ituneslibrary" and then just import it all in again . . . iTunes is fun

exactly why I said you don't need to do what sarbjeet said you can have it all stored on an external drive as long as itunes knows too. I can't help any further as I can't remeber where it located and don't have itunes handy. Will post later if no one else had.

Is the hard drive connected to your laptop when you try and sync the ipod?

iTunes isnt too bad in all honesty ive never really came up against too many problems, none that seriously affect me anyways. What problems has everyone else had ?

Yeah dont waste the space on the laptop for all the music, just have a dedicated folder on the Hd, then within itunes, i have a feeling that its the edit menu, then go to preferences, choose the advanced preferences, then music library will be there with "C;MyMusic\ituneslibrary" or something along those lines so click browse on that then choose"E:Myexternalisbiggerthanyours\massiveituneslibraryext"then that should be you click okay and it should import all your tunes and that:)hope it helps

edit > preferences > advanced >itunes media folder location. Check to to see whether that is set tot the correct address for your external hard drive.

In this situation I would have gone into the advanced preferences and use the 'copy files to the itunes media folder when adding' button. Then used iTunes to add the music, it would have copied it all over to the computer.

I do think it is a good piece of software, especially on a mac as its a lot faster, but it does take some getting used to and some organising to get it just right.
