I have bought an iphone 3g from a friend, and an o2 simplicity sim only deal with 12 month contract.

I have waited over 72 hours but my phone/sim still hasnt been activated. I was told it would be 24 hours maximum by o2.

I have updated to latest itunes 8.2.1 and latest phone software, i have also restored the phone in itunes.

when i put the sim in the phone inthe top left hand corner it says ' searching' then says in the middle of the screen 'waiting for activation this may take some time'.

I can see all of the apps and use them but cannot make any calls whatsoever or texts. I have been in to the settings and turned 3g as told this may work but didnt, I have changed the cellular network data to mobile.o2.co.uk and back to the original setting (forgot what this was). I have tried a soft reset and also changed carrier settings from automatic to o2 and back again a few times but still no joy.

The sim definitely works as i receive signal with my n97.

Any ideas what to do? all help will be repped and appreciated!

Thanks

Could it have been reported lost/stolen, and been blocked?

can a phone actually be blocked? thought it was just sim cards? I have used the sim in other phones and it has worked!

How good of a 'friend' was it that you bought the phone from

Yeah says 'no service' and has done this for ages. It has been activated in itunes by my friend. Is there any way to get it unblocked? im guessing not as this would make the blocking process pointless.

If you are getting a signal in your old nokia, and in the iphone it is showing no bars and getting no signal, it has probably had its imei blocked as stolen.

The imei can be altered quite easily on the iphone, but this is illegal. No pm's please.

No,you can't legally get it unblocked, the phone is now useless in the uk but it can be used abroad

Was it really your friend? I suspect your lying as most people would be annoyed if their friend sold them a stolen phone.

I'm pretty sure it's a europe wide IMEI block list and not just a UK one.

No my friend found it at Glastonbury Festival, then said I could have it under the condition I bought him a 2nd hand 8gb ipod touch which i found for £100 as that is what he used it as. He said I could try it first and if it didnt work he would take it back and use as a touch again and then wouldnt have to buy him a new one.

But thanks for calling me a liar...very generous of you

You're surprised that a stolen phone isnt working?

I know your friend found it, but it is still someone else property.
