Why would a PCI-e gfx card work in one machine but not another?

Have a computer that gives me 3 beeps on boot 1 long 2 short (I think) looked at beep error codes and it indicated a display adapter error. Tried another gfx card in the machine and it worked, then tried the broken? Card in another machine and it works.

Anything that can cause something like this?

What is the graphics card? If there's insufficient power in one machine it may not boot but any time that's happened it tends to make beeping pattern distinctly different from a standard bios one.

It's a less powerful one that I replaced it with Geforce 7300 original card replaced with 8600gt. It's worked fine in the past.

Back end of March, I got tons of stores stashed. PM me your address I'll send one tomorrow (I'm sure I did like). Looking at going self employed telco engineer. Well regretting it, but no turning back now

Are you sure? I'd have thought the 8600GT is quite a bit more power hungary than a 7300 (especially if it's not the GT).

7300 is the original card (in daughters pc), 8600GT is from my machine. Sorry if I didn't make that clear, I can swap them round and both machines work. I just don't want the 7300 in my pc and she doens't need a 8600 for what she does (habbo, iplayer etc)

Daft question but before swapping did you double check it was seated correctly?

so the 8600 works in both pcs and the 7300 only works in yours even though it was the originally in your daughters and working?
