"The have a go at Martin thread..." by Martin Lewis

To those who've criticised or even abused me on the board. I've noticed. I've read them. So have other users of the site. You've made your point. To those who wanted to hurt me and make me feel bad, you suceeded.

Sadly human nature means one nasty comment negates 100 good ones. I've read much of what's been written and feel slightly sick on the back of it. I've spent my career aiming to save people money and help them, to see the venom in some of the posts isn't easy; and many of the comments are untrue and unfounded.

It's time this board got back to savings people money

I've deliberately not stopped such negative comments, as I don't want to censor. Yet this is the most unpredictable, unprecedented financial periods in living memory. For the first time there's concern that "savings aren't safe" by definition is a paradox, though thankfully it looks like no one will lose a penny.

Many people are relying on this site, and the forum for discussion and information. Yet I've received complaints that the forum is being logjammed by the discussion threads trying to assign blame. Frankly thats less important than helping savers with their problems.

FROM FRIDAY AM THIS WILL BE THE ONLY OPEN 'HAVE A GO AT MARTIN' THREAD

From tomorrow morning all the other "having a go" threads will be closed. All new 'having a go threads' will be merged into this one and this will be the only thread in the forum for such comments. If other threads are disrupted with such comments, those posts will be deleted.

The forum has always operated on a principle that the main boards are not for discussions like this. I relaxed that rule for a couple of days as I felt it appropriate. Yet hopefully going back to normal will allow the forum to get on with its job.

Martin

PS. Having already written one blog, in the heat of the moment. I intend to publish a more considered blog on "what could and what couldn't have been done" regarding Icesave in a day or two.

Right now the team and my time is taken up is trying to ensure people know whats going on and protect their savings.

there are 60 pages of 'we love you martin' in the thead! i think it was just a ploy for a quick ego boost.

You have to be fair though - it's not like anyone saw this craziness coming. In normal circumstances it was good advice although I am thankful I didn't do it.
#14
It reminds me of the big fuss when admin did the "Change over", Feedback had never been so busy. threads started hourly.

You give the best advice with the knowledge you have at the time. :)

i dont understand why he should have egg on his face
it wasnt his fault and only the fault of the people who put money in the banks
if i said jump in a river would you?
how about all the deals people put up?
shoud we blame the poster of the car deal if guy bought one and he crashed and killed somebody?
should we blane the poster who said buy a wii theyre brilliant and find out its not to their taste and sell it on ebay later
or the posters of the swimming pools and someone drowned
at the end of he day we should take responsibilites of out own actions and not create a scapegoat

as put above....... how was martin to knwo the banking sector would crumble ??

he found a good deal for uk customers, which was used by councils and charities and was government approved ........ he said it was a good idea to put your money there but i never once saw him put a gun to someone's head and tell them they have to put money there....

people need to get a grip, he provided a recommendation and people should realise if they put money in on a recommendation then they are responsible for the outcome...... nothing to do with the recommender ........

also you win some, you lose some........... his next recommendation maybe soooo brilliant that he will get reaps of praise.......... You cannot judge what is going to happen within the financial sector ......... the biggest banks are going under ........ no one is pyschic ...... :)

Bit harsh. Why the personal snipes against him?

There are a lot of people who might not have found this site if it wasn't for MSE. Yes I prefer the layout of this site. He has been on TV for a while and not surprisingly due to the current situation he is in huge demand.

He has helped huge numbers of people sort out their financial matters and has been a lifeline for many. He is not a God. He continues to expose financial loopholes publicly. For that, there are plenty in the financial world who want to bring him down. We don't need to have a go as well.

He has made money from being good at something whilst helping others. What is wrong with that?

I like the man's style - (a) acknowledging thoughtless posters can hurt, and (b) deciding angry people shouldn't be censured but given a 'controlled' space to vent . After all, they'll come around eventually and realise anger was the wrong call. But I agree with magicbeans about all the pictures - I always cringe at this USA-style personality thing. 'Our' admin is so much nicer is that regard ... < sluuuurrrrp! >
